Ever since I got him I have always wanted to breed cockatiels. I belong to four different bird clubs. The Native Cockatiel Society of Australia Inc, The Parrot Society of Australia, The Australian National Cockatiel Society and the Blacktown Cockatiel Club. Links to some of these clubs can be found on the "Links" page. This season I am concentrating on breeding Pastelface Lutino Pearls, Pastelface Pastel Silvers, Pastelface Platinums, Pastelface Cinnamon Pieds, Whiteface Lutinos (Albinos), Whiteface Pieds. All birds I breed come with a breeding certificate and have an ANCS or NCSA closed year coloured leg ring. If you are after a hand raised bird for a pet, I often have them available, but if not you could always order one from me just to be sure. Greys start from $50 AUD. Colours start from $60 AUD.

What is a Cockatiel? The Cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus) is a very popular pet bird from Australia. It is a member of the parrot family, with an average lifespan of 10-20 years. Cockatiels are approximately 12-14 inches long, but half of that is tail! A Cockatiel has a beautiful crest of feathers on its head that can be raised or lowered according to the bird's mood. Although Cockatiels come in only one color in the wild (Grey), domestic Cockatiels come in a wide variety of colors and patterns.
Pet Potential A Cockatiel can make an excellent pet. It's high trainability and gentle nature make it a wonderful "first bird". Cockatiels are very sweet, lovable birds that love attention. Many like to be scratched or stroked behind the crest or on the cheeks. They aren't a hyperactive bird; when not playing, Cockatiels like to just sit their and observe the world. Unfortunately, some people with asthma or allergies can not keep Cockatiels due to the amount of fine dust that Cockatiels produce. Giving the bird regular baths, and installing a quality air purifier can sometimes overcome this problem. Most baby Cockatiels are handfed. These handfed babies are automatically friendly and trusting, requiring no taming. Handfed birds often think of themselves as little people rather than birds!

These elegant looking exotic birds are known for their pumpkin orange cheek patches, bright yellow crests and long sleek tails. Ranging in colors and color variations of yellow, gray, and white, cockatiels provide us with companionship, affection and entertainment. By tending to their needs with love, these charming birds greet us with songs or words when we awaken each morning and amuse us with their antics all day long.
Cockatiels are parrots and 1 of approximately 340 different species. Their name comes from a Dutch word "kakatielje" which means little cockatoo. DNA research (UC-Davis, 1997) shows that cockatiels really do belong to one of the cockatoo families. The scientific name for these elegant birds is Nymphicus, hollandicus, which means "Goddess of New Holland", the name of Australia during 1700s-1800s. Australia is the native homeland of cockatiels. Our pet cockatiels are bred domestically because Australia banned exportation of all native birds in 1894.

Infrared Cockatiels
All birds are warm-blooded. This means that they try to maintain a constant internal body temperature regardless of the temperature of their surroundings. Warm-blooded animals generate their own internal heat. These cockatiels are covered with thick feathers which insulate them from the cold. In the thermal infrared images shown below, you can see how areas of the cockatiel's bodies which are not well insulated, such as their eyes, radiate more heat.

There are many variations of the Cockatiel, the most common is the normal grey, pictured above. In the normal grey Cockatiel the main, (but not only) distinction between sexes is the colouration of the head and facial features. The males having a bright yellow face and orange cheek patches, the females are mainly grey around the head with a fainter orange around the cheeks. They are approximately 12 inches from head to the end of their long tail. Because they have proved to breed quite easily in captivity they have become quite common, but because of this they should never be underrated. They make the most excellent little pets with a fairly long life span of up to 30 years.

  • Make your cage comfortable and festive with food, water, toys, and treats Keep your bird in a quiet and warm location until he/she becomes acclimated Besides seed and water, add fresh fruit and vegetables to their diet such as carrots, apples, pears, oranges, bananas, kale, spinach, broccoli, multi-grain breads, and sprout seeds. Remember variety adds spice of life and is good for your bird. Your bird is not just a pet but, a new member to your family. Provide spray millet. This will calm your bird during transition
