Giardia in Cockatiels
from the NACS Newsletter The 'Tiel Times by
Ann M. Bourke, DVM
Kensington Bird and Animal Hospital
977 Farmington Avenue
Kensington, CT 06037 What is giardia? Giardia is a parasite that lives in the intestinal tract of numerous species. It is a protozoan a type of motile parasite and appears most prevalent in cockatiels. Birds and other animals become infected by ingesting the cysts of giardia, usually by means of contaminated water, but also directly by ingestion of feces containing the cysts. Giardia can survive for a substantial amount of time in the environment, so infection can occur simply by placing a bird in a contaminated cage or aviary. No one is certain as to why cockatiels are over-represented with this disease, but some believe there may be a genetic predisposition or immune deficiency, making this species poorly able to fight off infection on their own. What are giardia's symptoms of infection? Cockatiels with giardiasis are often asymptomatic. They carry the parasite but do not seemed harmed by the infection. The parasite may be detected during routine examination of an otherwise healthy bird. Those showing symptoms can exhibit signs of poor weight gain, shabby feathering, feather plucking, itchiness, or watery droppings. The most common presentation at our practice is a bird with watery droppings and ripping feathers out as if they were painful. How is giardia diagnosed?

Article IV - Breeding Cockatiels
    BREEDING COCKATIELS
    by Amy Patria
One advantage to breeding cockatiels is that they aren't extremely hard to pair up and get results. But, if you are breeding for real quality (large, well shaped, well marked, good natured) birds, it's a bit more of a challenge. Anyone can just place a nestbox on a cage, place two cockatiels of the opposite sex in it, and let nature take it's course. But, responsible breeding takes a lot more thought and time than that. In preparing to breed your cockatiels, you have to consider the health of the breeders, their colors and appearance (and what colors you want to end up with) as well as their temperaments. If you want to breed certain mutations, then you will need to familiarize yourself with some basic genetics concepts and how they affect mutations. You also must prepare a cage which will allow the necessary exercise and space during the breeding, brooding, fledging, and weaning stages. In addition to that, you must provide a nestbox which is suitable for the breeding pair and up to around 6 or so babies as they grow. Sexing
Be sure you start with a true pair. It is possible for females to lay infertile eggs without a male present. It's hard to sex some cockatiels due to their mutations. The lutino whiteface (a.k.a. albino) and the heavy pied mutations are nearly impossible to visually sex due to the lack of any darker color in their tail feathers and their wings. Generally, if the bird is extremely vocal, it's a male, but some females also have this ability.

30. Cockatiels, Advice From A Breeder
cockatiels ADVICE FROM A BREEDER. For the breeder, especially those juststarting this experience, the choice of cockatiels is an excellent one.
http://www.bluequaker.com/Art-015.htm
COCKATIELS - ADVICE FROM A BREEDER by Linda Greeson So many books and articles have been written about Cockatiels I really hesitated for a long time before presuming to add yet another. I have read just about everything that has been written about these delightful little birds and feel that through my experience with them I can add some information that has not already been covered, as well as briefly some of the well known basic facts so widely presented. There is good reason for the wealth of information currently available. Except for the Budgerigar, the Cockatiel is rated as the most popular and widely kept of the approximately 340 species of the order of psittacine birds. They are a hardier bird than their rival, the Budgie, and have a life span of 15 to 20 years versus the Budgie's 7 to 8. They are gentle and sociable by nature and have pert, bright personalities. They quickly pick up words and phrases and especially love to whistle. Their speech may not be as clear as that of the larger birds, but they are by comparison much less expensive. There is no more ideal pet for the novice than a young, hand fed Cockatiel. For the breeder, especially those just starting this experience, the choice of Cockatiels is an excellent one. Even though we have bred many varieties of larger exotic birds for many years with considerable success, our prolific Cockatiels can always be depended on to pay their feed bills. In addition to the financial return I have found that the study involved each year in making the right decisions in setting up my breeding pairs to be all absorbing. When the these decisions result in larger and more beautiful birds, this hobby almost becomes an addiction! Having one of your own baby birds grow up to make the top bench at a show is thrilling beyond words and inspires one to greater concentration on producing even better specimens each following year.

They pick up words and phrases quickly and especially love to whistle. 35. Getting Started Breeding Cockatiels
Getting Started Breeding cockatiels. By Debbie Maneke. The first step inbreeding cockatiels is of course selecting a good breeding pair.
http://www.acstiels.com/getting.htm
Getting Started Breeding Cockatiels By Debbie Maneke The first step in breeding cockatiels is of course selecting a good breeding pair After selecting a pair of birds your next step will be preparing them for breeding. The quarantine period of 30-45 days will give your new additions time to acclimate to their new surroundings, diet and caging. During this time you can prepare the needed items for breeding. For every pair you set-up for breeding you will need a breeding cage, nest box, food and water bowls, mineral or cuttle bone, a supply of daily food items, ACS leg bands, a record book to record your babies for future reference. (ACS pedigree cards are excellent for record keeping), and proper lighting, which for breeding birds should be 13-15 hours of light daily. The breeding cage should be as large as you can possibly supply. Many breeders use cages that are two foot by two foot by three foot long. These cages are of course "home made". Many pet stores may stock "Prevue 123 or 125" cages. These cages are a good size for a beginner’s first purchase. Another source for a good beginning breeder cage may be found with one of our current advertisers "Parrotatt". After you have purchased or made your breeding cage your next step will be purchasing a nest box. The most readily available nest box will be wooden and will measure about 12 inches tall by 10 inches deep with a 3-inch round hole at the front of the box. (This hole allows your breeding pair access to the inside of the box.) The nest box should also have an inspection door either on the top of the box or on the backside of the box. The inspection door serves as a way to check on the pair as well as for removing baby birds for handfeeding. Many breeders have switched from the standard wooden nest box to the new box and holder that was recently discussed in the

COCKATIELS
Part 1
by Michael Anderson © Reflecting the Past
Platinum Cockatiel
(c)
Nymphicus hollandicus
When I began in Cockatiels in 1986, my aviaries consisted of three flights and six pair of Cockatiels, being Pieds, Pearl Pieds and a Lutino, worth approximately $40 each. There were no Platinums, Cinnamons or Whitefaces to be seen. 1988 saw Platinums generally available here in Brisbane for $150 each. Platinums were then called Cinnamon, or Lacewing Cinnamon in the case of Pearled Platinum because of some brownish tones. Confusion reigned when the true Cinnamon appeared and we had two different mutations with the same name. Australian Birdkeeper in 1988 featured one page of classifieds relating to birds for sale, of which only one ad was for Cockatiels. By comparison, in 1996 some eight pages, covering 120 classifieds, featured 30 for Cockatiels which is indicative of this species growing popularity. Again, on reflecting the year 1989, Cinnamons from Western Australia were commanding $1,300 per pair. Likewise, this year saw West Coast Silvers bringing $1,000 a pair however, some were disappointing and were more grey than silver a rather diluted version of the Normal.
