Oreo the male is a cinnamon, pearl, pied. He was born Dec of 1998. His soon to be mate is named Buttercup. She is a gray female who was born Dec of 1999. I got Chiko in February 1986 and she's still the biggest baby I've ever had. If I leave the room, she will let me know I forgot her by screaming at me, so I have to go back and take her with me. Don't know what I would ever do without this character. DJ came along next - I got him from a girlfriend of mine for babysitting her birds while she was on vacation. I had a tough choice, because DJ and another bird looked exactly alike, but when he started singing, I knew I wanted him. He got his name because he sounded like a radio DJ auditioning for my attention! His mate is Snowy who will be shown later. DJ's first love was a cockatiel named Pepper, who I got from a co-worker, but later I had to have Pepper put to sleep because she became so crippled up she couldn't sit on her perch or walk - it was a hard thing to put her down, and DJ was extremely depressed for about 2 days, but then like most men, moved on with her life with Snowy!!! I have been treating DJ for allergies ever since I got him and he also has liver trouble; therefore, all my birds eat pelleted food and it has helped DJ feel much better. June 1, 1993-Mar 7, 2001

Their life expectancy is around 15-20 years, but one famous cockatiel lived to be 38. The natural colour of a cockatiel is grey with a yellow face and crest and with orange cheek patches. Among pet cockatiels there are lots of other colour varieties, the most popular of which are the lutino (white), pied (patches of dark and light feathers), cinnamon, and pearl. Cockatiels are intelligent and amusing pets, which need lots of attention and can learn to perform tricks, whistle tunes, and talk. If a pet cockatiel does not have other bird buddies, he should be given the chance to regularly interact with his human friends. Klonkku Klonkku is our pet cockatiel, born in 1990. He is fairly tame, likes to sit on a shoulder, watch TV and type on the keyboard (in fact parts of this may have been written by him...). He loves taking showers and hates nail-clipping. He can not 'speak', but he is a talented singer and whistler. He knows several tricks, like getting on/off a finger/shoulder on command, going into his cage (where he spends his time when nobody else is at home) etc. The trick that our friends find most hilarious though is the 'shitting on command'. This, however, is particularly useful it's not easy to housebreak a bird, but it is possible!

They can rival the antics of parrots much larger than themselves, including their larger cousins, the cockatoos. They can smoothly charm you into almost anything if the mood so strikes them. And.... breeders of these little cuties have added new dimensions to the ways they can catch your eye. Cockatiels now grace our world with many beautiful color mutations which are a far departure from the original, but still beautiful, Grey cockatiel. At present, you can find cockatiels in an assortment of colors ranging from the normal Grey, to yellow, white, soft cocoa brown (cinnamon), pastel tan (fallow) and silver. Some breeders are even working on green mutations. Cockatiels may have normal markings or be pearl, pied, totally white or be in combinations like pearl pied. They can possess yellow, orange, pale peach (as in pastelface), Grey, soft brown or white cheek patches. They even come in combinations like cinnamon pearl pied whitefaces. These are mainly white with a soft cocoa brown color in their wings and in patches on their bodies. The patches have a lacy pattern, referred to as pearl markings. The females of this mutation normally have soft brown cheek patches (sometimes barely visible) while the males have all white faces with no other color to their cheeks.

I'm limiting this to cockatiels and lovebirds because I have only owned two cockatiels and one lovebird (and a bunch of untame budgies). Larger parrots share much in common with these smaller members of the family, but their needs and their abilities differ greatly. If you are planning on getting a pet bird, or are a new owner, I highly recommend the magazine BIRD TALK . In addition, you should buy/borrow books on bird keeping at a library, bookstore, or good petstore. And definitely locate a good, qualified avian vet right away, if you haven't already! He or she will be much more qualified to answer your health/medical questions than me. Cockatiels Cockatiels are small, usually grey birds with a movable crest, long tail, and white "racing stripes" on their wings. (They are, by the way, native to Australia and I think are considered desert birds.) They are also available in all white, and all sorts of other shades of grey. Mostly, the color doesn't matter (though white ones are said to be more prone to panic). Adult males usually have a yellow face, which often, but not always, distinguishes them from the females (two of the biggest exceptions to this rule are with Lutino cockatiels (cockatiels without the grey pigment), in which both genders have yellow faces, and apparently adult pied cockatiel males may have grey faces like females!).

Tiel Tips: Hello and welcome to Tiel Crest. In this site, I will introduce you the the lovable cockatiel ( Nymphicus hollandicus ). A native bird of Australia, this small crested parrot has made its way into the hearts and homes of people all over the world. In the USA, the cockatiel is one of the most popular pet birds, second only to the budgerigar (aka parakeet).
