Yule Tide carols are being piped in via Muzac to shopping malls across America. Ah, yes, the holiday rush is on. It's that time of year when the lines are long and shoppers are irritable. There are parties to go to, cards to write, baking to be done, a tree to get, lights to be hung and presents to wrap. Then there is the deluge of television advertisements that tell us what we must buy in order to make our loved ones happy. The world has taken Christmas and turned it into a celebration of consumerism. For many children, Christmas is about what presents they are going to get. They have no idea what it is really about. What can we do as parents to make sure our children know the true meaning of Christmas?

Use Holiday Season to Teach Cultural Diversity
By Jinny Gudmundsen
Published on December 27th, 2002 During this holiday season, in between family get-togethers and traditional celebrations, consider using the Internet to broaden your child’s awareness of holidays other than the one your family celebrates. Here are two sites that can help teach about holiday diversity.

History Channel.com
www.historychannel.com/exhibits/holidays/main.html

The History Channel reviews the holidays of Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. It explains the history of each and the associated traditions. Kids can discover how the traditions of decorating Christmas trees and sending Christmas cards started. They can view a list of “Amazing Hanukkah Feats” and learn about the seven symbols of Kwanzaa. Kids Domain.com
www.kidsdomain.com

For a more hands-on approach to exploring holidays, go to the Kids Domain site. It is a portal for holiday games, crafts, recipes, and e-cards relating to Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Ramadan. By clicking on a specific holiday in the “Holidays” section, children will find a wide assortment of activities. There are Hanukkah games, mazes, and word puzzles; Kwanzaa-themed word searches, crossword, and coloring pages; and Ramadan information and e-cards. Under “Christmas,” kids can send a letter to Santa, learn about how Christmas is celebrated around the world, or find Christmas recipes that are fun for the whole family to make.

Another Christmas is over and after a brief rest we will begin working on Christmas 2003. Remember, Santa is watching all year long, so be sure to be as good as you can be all year long. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
What this World seems to have forgotten...
The REASON for the Season....
Just last Monday night I had a strange visitor. This is how it happened. I had just finished the household chores for the night and was preparing to go to bed when I heard a noise in the front of the house. I opened the door of the front room, and to my surprise, Santa Claus himself stepping out from behind the Christmas Tree. He placed his fingers over his lips so I wouldn't cry out. "What are you doing here..." I started to ask, but the words choked up in my throat as I saw that he had tears in his eyes. His usual jolly manner is gone ~ gone was the eager, boisterous soul we all know. As I stood there in my night shirt bewildered, Santa said, "Teach The Children." My perplexed expression still showed in the near darkness. "Teach them the old meaning of Christmas ~ the meanings that Christmas nowadays has forgotten." "Teach the Children, the star was a heavenly sign of promise long ages ago. God promised a Savior for the world and a sign of the fulfillment of that promise was the great star of the East. The star now reminds us of God's love for mankind and of God fulfilling His promise. The countless shining stars at night ~ one for each man ~ now show the burning hope of all mankind." Santa gently laid the star upon the fireplace mantle and drew forth from the bag a glittering red Christmas ornament.

By REBECCA STEIMLE
metroparent November 25, 2002 Is your child a Sister Bear or a Brother Bear?
In the Berenstain Bears' book Meet Santa Bear, Brother Bear's Christmas wish list is three items long. Sister's list, on the other hand, is seven sheets long. From Happy Pink Pony to Bear-Hug Teddy, Sister Bear wants it all.
This time of year especially, it's natural for children to be affected by all the advertising, abundance and affluence around them, just like Sister Bear was. But that's precisely what makes this the perfect time to teach children that there's more to Christmas than the thrill of getting - it's the joy of giving.

How does Santa Claus fit with Christmas?
Armed with the background of Santa Claus, we can use the true story of St. Nicholas to help support the Christian aspects of Christmas.
    John L. Eich
What is happening to December 25? Today’s Christmas is an event that has every parent holding an overspent credit card, every pastor dealing with a subject that’s lost its first surprise, every child clutching a sticky candy cane, every person seeing Christmas as a “holidaze”every Christian lamenting that the birth of Jesus is eclipsed by nutcrackers, Santa Claus, and a wish list.
Perhaps for Christian parents one of the most difficult issues with the way Christmas is celebrated is what to do with Santa Claus. Opinions range from allowing the children to believe in the jolly old elf who drops presents down chimneys to not even mentioning him.
While there is always a danger in teaching children to believe in a story that later they find out is untrue, no matter where they look, no matter what TV shows they watch, Santa Claus will be mentioned. There is no way to shield them completely. Perhaps, armed with the background of Santa Claus, we can use the true story of St. Nicholas and the myth to help support the Christian aspects of Christmas.
    A lesson from history
Nicholas was born in AD 270 in the seacoast town of Patara in Asia Minor, which is present day Turkey. His wealthy parents died in a plague while he was little. As he grew older, he traveled and enjoyed using his money to help people. When he was nearly 50 he decided to become a pastor. This is when his story really begins.

Posted on Sun, Nov. 24, 2002 These Christmas stories will amuse, move and teach By JOHN MARK EBERHART The Kansas City Star Children's books for Christmas: Is there a better gift? They can enthrall the little ones and teach something, too. Here are seven for the season: Here Comes Santa Claus , words and music by Gene Autry and Oakley Haldeman with illustrations by Bruce Whatley (HarperCollins; $16.99; ages 3 and up) . This one comes at you right down Santa Claus Lane, courtesy of Gene Autry, the "singing cowboy" who died in 1998. He penned this popular tune with Oakley Haldeman. Bruce Whatley's color paintings provide a charming accompaniment. A Small Miracle , by Peter Collington (Alfred A. Knopf; $15.95; all ages) . This book is astounding, moving, altogether wonderful. Collington's "story" does not employ one single word rather, what you'll find here are 96 panel paintings that tell the story of an old woman who knows what it truly means to give and to suffer misfortune, and ultimately to experience a miracle. If you ever think this season has turned into nothing but crass commercialism, this book is one purchase you won't regret. It will remind entire families that the soul of Christmas is not the pocketbook, but rather love, compassion and charity. I simply cannot say enough good things about this title. Every adult should explain this story to every child.

    Drop Sequencing
    Then Add Max
MIDI is still important, though, and so is programming. MAX is the one application that combines both in a user-friendly environment. Its layout resembles a flowchart, thus emphasizing the conceptual aspects of programming over the specifics of code. Once learned, however, MAX provides an excellent foundation for a more advanced study of programming. MAX also introduces students to the specifics of the MIDI implementation . Different status bytes and their associated data bytes are handled by separate objects. This reinforces the conceptual understanding of MIDI that I teach in the classroom. MAX also allows easy integration of Kyma (which sends and receives MIDI) with other samplers and synthesizers in the studio.

"Gimme, Gimme" v. Doing Good: Children, Charity and Giving
    by Cynthia Townley Ewer
    Editor, OrganizedHome.Com
Recently, I eavesdropped on an online discussion about teaching children to give. The original writer was a concerned, conscientious parent of a preschooler. This father shared his plan to teach his daughter about holiday giving. They would, he wrote, sort through the child's toys and set aside several toys "to give to needy children." An admirable effort, I thoughtuntil he set forth the rest. He hoped to locate a charitable agency that would permit his daughter to hand her toys directly to the child who would receive them. This way, he felt, his child would learn what giving meant in a direct and unambiguous manner. I stared at the computer terminal and asked "What is wrong with this picture?" Over the next few days, I argued with myself. "How can you criticize a parent who wants to teach a young child to give?" I asked. "So many parents don't teach that lesson!" Still, I couldn't help thinking about what this "lesson" would mean to the other child involvedand what it said about children, charity, and giving.

    The theology of Santa
Santa, as taught to most children, has most of the attributes of God: He is virtually omnipresent . He can visit hundreds of millions of homes in one night. He is omniscient . He monitors each child; he is all-seeing and all-knowing; he knows when they are bad and good. Although not omnipotent, he does have great powers. He can manufacture gifts for hundreds of millions of children, and deliver them in one night each to the correct child. He is all-good and all-just . He judges which children have shown good behavior and rewards them appropriately. Bad children are bypassed or receive a lump of coal. He is eternal He rewards good and punishes bad behavior. However, there are negative aspects to Santa's behavior that can damage a child's self-esteem: In practice, children are not rewarded with gifts according to their behavior; they receive presents according to the amount of money that their parents are willing or able to spend on them at Christmas time. A child may receive little or nothing from Santa because his/her parents are poor. Unfortunately, the child has probably adsorbed from the media and their friends only bad children get nothing from Santa. He/she might begin to look upon themselves as a bad person. This may well damage their self esteem.
