Hardware Story Athlon gets souped-up chipsets Tuesday 22nd January 2002 Matthew Broersma AMD's Athlon processors will get the ability to use DDR333 memory with new offerings from Via and SiS, boosting the speed of high-performance systems Via Technologies and Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) are to step up their offerings for AMD-based PC processors next month with the release of their next-generation chipsets; Via's KT333, using faster memory than is available now, and the SiS745. The chipsets will give buyers of computer systems based on AMD chips access to faster technology, and will determine whether Via can hold onto its dominant position in the market for AMD-compatible chipsets. The KT333 will launch in the second half of next month, ahead of the CeBIT 2002 electronics show in March, according to sources. It will be Via's first offering to allow AMD Athlon chips to use DDR333 memory, which potentially ups overall system speed for PCs using the fastest processors: current Via chipsets use DDR266. Hardware Story ServerWorks short on chipsets Tuesday 11th March 2003 Michael Kanellos, CNET News.com A manufacturing problem with the major server chipset maker could mean delays in server supplies ServerWorks, which specialises in chipsets for Intel servers, said on Monday that it will have trouble meeting demand through March, a situation that could crimp server supplies. The Santa Clara, California-based company said that it had a problem with manufacturing its Grand Champion chipset for two-processor servers in adequate volumes. The problem has been fixed, but supplies are likely to be tight for the month. The chipset shortage could hamper server supply. Although not a household name, ServerWorks is the dominant power in the market for server chipsets, which serve as the main conduit between the microprocessor and the rest of the computer. Hewlett-Packard, Dell Computer and IBM, among others, use ServerWorks chipsets in various computers. Intel has begun to compete more vigorously against the company, which is a subsidiary of Broadcom, in the past year. A representative for ServerWorks said the problem did not affect the quality or functionality of the chipset. Instead, yields, or the number of good chips per wafer, were lower than expected. A change in the manufacturing methodology has changed that.

Der neue Halbleiter soll für die Funkübertragung von Hi-Fi-Sound und Video-Bildern sorgen, ohne dass es zu spürbaren negativen Auswirkungen auf Akkulaufzeiten kommt. Diverse Hersteller hätten sich bereits dafür entschieden, diesen Chipsatz in ihre kommenden Produkte einzubauen, so die Siemens-Tochter. Eine weitere Neuentwicklung ist ein Sicherheits-Chip, der laut dem Hersteller in jede SIM-Karte (Subscriber Identify Module) für GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications)- und UMTS-Geräte integriert werden kann. Der Chip soll Daten und bestimmte Anwendungen verschlüsseln, um beispielsweise mobiles Banking per Handy sicherer zu gestalten. Eine dritte Lösung wurde für Nutzer von Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) vorgestellt: Auf einer gewöhnlichen Compact-Flash-Karte hat Infineon ein vollwertiges GSM/GPRS-System untergebracht. September 2001, 14:13 Uhr Entwicklung für den in Kooperation entstandenen Itanium-Chip liegt nun ganz in den Händen des Prozessor-Giganten Hewlett-Packard (HP, Börse Frankfurt: HWP) hat seine für das Design von Server Chipsets verantwortlichen Ingenieure an Intel (Börse Frankfurt: INL) ausgeliehen. Diese Allianz könnte neue Technologien für den 64-Bit Server-Chip Itanium erarbeiten, der von HP und Intel mit entwickelt wurde. Die Aktion von HP und Intel wird von Branchenbeobachern mit dem Spielertausch zwischen zwei Mannschaften im Sport verglichen. Dem Unternehmen nahestehende Quellen berichten von knapp 100 betroffenen Technikern. Die Itanium-Server konkurrieren mit den Unix/RISC-Servern von Sun (Börse Frankfurt: SSY). Die aktuell im Markt befindlichen HP-Server basieren mehrheitlich auf PA-RISC-Chips, aber das Unternehmen hat angekündigt, in Zukunft auf die Itanium-Basis migrieren zu wollen. Zuvor hatten die Ingenieure bei HP an PA-RISC-Chipsets gearbeitet. Ein Vertreter von Intel wollte die Zahl der Mitarbeiter nicht nennen, erklärte aber, dass fast alle betroffenen Angestellten Posten bei Intel in Santa Clara akzeptiert hätten. Chipsets O chipset comanda quase todo o funcionamento do computador, vamos assim ver aqui quais os que estão em uso atualmente. Nos primeiros computadores padrão PC, os circuitos controladores da placa mãe, ficavam espalhados em diversos pontos da placa. Alguém teve então a ideia de juntar todos estes circuitos em alguns poucos chips. Isto traz diversas vantagens. A primeira, é logicamente o preço, pois produzindo-se uma quantidade menor de componentes os custos caem bastante. Mas a principal vantagem, é que estando todos os componentes muito próximos, pode-se conseguir que a placa mãe suporte velocidades mais altas, pois o sinal elétrico demora muito menos tempo para ir de um componente ao outro, além de atenuar outros problemas, como interferências. A maioria dos chipsets são compostos de dois chips, alguns porém são compostos de apenas 1 ou mesmo 3 ou 4 chips. Depois do processador, os maiores chips que vai encontrar na placa mãe são justamente o chipset.
