Fourteen years ago, Chungungo was one of hundreds of villages in the region without a local source of fresh water. Located on a thin strip of land sandwiched between the Pacific and the Andes, it boasts the most varied selection of climates anywhere in the world. The driest desert on Earth, Fjords, gently rolling hills, lakes, volcanoes, long sandy beaches and snow-capped mountains - whatever a tourist fancies, he or she will find it here. And with the recent expansion of air transport, the previously isolated country is easily accessible from any point in the world. To cope with an ever-increasing influx of visitors, the Santiago Airport was completely remodelled and now offers excellent assistance and specialised services such as duty free shops, car rentals, money exchange, information offices with bi-lingual experienced staff and many others. A first-time visitor to Santiago will probably be taken aback when he first sets foot within the perimeters of the capital. Generally, what a tourist expects is a developing country, which still lingers on the borders of the previous century and struggles hard to catch up with European and North American cities.

There are a multitude of very good parks here, and plenty of opportunities for fine adventure travel. Chile is justly famous as the location of Torres del Paine, considered by many to be the finest nature travel destinations in all of South America. Location, Geography Climate For anyone who has ever been fascinated by geography, the long, impossibly thin line of Chile has always produced a tiny moment of astonishment. Chile stretches over 4,300 km (2,700 mi) along the southwestern coast of South America, a distance roughly the same as that from San Francisco to New York, or Edinburgh to Baghdad. At the same time, its width never exceeds 240 km (150 mi), making the country more than eighteen times longer than its widest point. In the center of the country, however, is a long and expansive river valley, a five hundred mile corridor occupied in the north by vineyards and great farms and in the south by primeval forests and enchanting lakes. Santiago, the capital, anchors the northern and more prosperous section of the central valley. The lush Lake District to the south, however, is the homeland of Chile's indigenous peoples, the Araucanians. Also part of Chile are two notable Pacific possessions-the Juan Fernandez Islands and the famous Easter Island, both of which are administered as national parks. The Juan Fernandez islands are located about 670 km off the Chilean coast, while Easter Island is situated 3700 km distant.

After 12 year of primary and secondary education, students apply to continue their education at the university level. The university system consists of 25 traditional universities and 40 private universities. Traditional universities include public and private universities with partial public funding. Students take a national test and apply, in a centralized process, for admission to one of the traditional universities. Private universities were created after 1980, and do not receive direct public funding. Each private institution defines its admission process. Undergraduate programs are 8 to 12 semesters in length, leading to a degree of licenciado or a professional title. Graduate programs include magister (master) and doctorado (Ph.D.) and require one to three years of further study and the submission of a thesis. Most universities work on a semester basis, and the grading system is from 1-7, with 4 (suficiente) being the lowest passing grade. Chile follows the Southern Hemisphere calendar . When applying for an academic year exchange, students will find it beneficial to begin their studies during the U.S. second term. The Chilean academic year runs from March to December.
