"Our children are our most precious possession. So when a need arises, it's comforting for all of us at Avon to know that Children First is there to provide the kind of safe and secure backup child care services our children need and deserve." Andrea Jung,
    President and CEO,
    Avon Products, Inc.
Backup Child Care From the day the doors opened in 1992, our name has been synonymous with quality. In partnership with business, we pioneered the field of backup child care. We set the standard for excellence and we continue to raise the bar. We think that the unique needs of backup child care for employers, parents and children are so important that we focus on it exclusively. What is backup child care?
Corporate-sponsored backup child care is an employer-paid benefit that enables employees to bring their children to a center conveniently located near work. Children visit a backup child care center only when the primary care arrangement breaks down or is unavailable. School is out. A babysitter is sick. The day care center is closed. The weather is bad. Employers may charge employees a nominal fee or co-payment for each visit.

Every Single Parent's Nightmare by Diane Chambers Inadequate child care is one of the most controversial and political topics being debated in this country today. How your young children spend their time out of your care will have an enormous impact on how well they perform, both socially and academically, in the future. Some question how welfare mothers can improve their lifestyles when affordable quality daycare is out of reach. Others bemoan our children being raised by daycare providers and suggest there should be more family-oriented policies to help mothers stay at home, where their children can thrive in a home environment. This controversy will always be with us. Ask any single parent what he or she thinks about daycare, and you will most likely hear a groan of dissatisfaction coupled with a look of bewilderment. Most often there aren't any discussions with them about whether or not daycare is good or bad for their children. All they know is that, to survive, they must rely on someone else to help care for their young children while they earn a living.

Nature of the Work Working Conditions Employment Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement ... Sources of Additional Information
    Significant Points
    • About 2 out of 5 childcare workers are self-employed; most of these are family childcare providers. A high school diploma and little or no experience are adequate for many jobs, but training requirements vary from a high school diploma to a college degree. High turnover should create good job opportunities.

Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Childcare workers nurture and teach children of all ages in childcare centers, nursery schools, preschools, public schools, private households, family childcare homes, and before- and after-school programs. These workers play an important role in a child's development by caring for the child when parents are at work or away for other reasons. Some parents enroll their children in nursery schools or childcare centers primarily to provide them with the opportunity to interact with other children. In addition to attending to children's basic needs, these workers organize activities that stimulate the children's physical, emotional, intellectual, and social growth. They help children explore their interests, develop their talents and independence, build self-esteem, and learn how to behave with others.
