Three years ago, I enrolled Anna in the stimulating, high-quality after-school program she attends while I work. "It's a great opportunity for learning and social development," says Mary Larner, editor of "When School Is Out," (www.futureofchildren.org) a recent report on the status of after-school care published by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. But not everyone has, or takes advantage of this option. In Chicago, for example, the report notes that after-school programs accommodate only 9 percent of kids. And a recent national survey found that only 13 percent of children in kindergarten through third grade participate in center-based after-school care on a regular basis. Still, these programs can be well worth the cost for those who use them.
