School-age child care includes almost any program that regularly enrolls children from kindergarten through early adolescence during the times when schools are traditionally closed. This includes programs operated by schools, family day care providers, recreation centers, youth-serving organizations, and child care centers. Also known as extended day programs, before-and-after school programs provide enrichment, academic instruction, recreation and supervised care. An array of drop-in and part-time programs also serve an ad hoc child care function.
Options Available to Families of School-age Children
Changes in family structure and values have altered the way in which many children are cared for. More mothers are in the labor force; more families are headed by a single parent; and fewer relatives are available to care for children. Increasing numbers of families are looking for ways to care for their children in before-and-after school programs or through the use of a patchwork quilt of care arrangements.

Another significant concern for working parents is how to provide quality care for their children before- and after school. The lack of such care is often a major factor in employee absenteeism. Moreover, studies have revealed that many working parents with "latch-key kids" display a measurable reduction in productivity during the hours of 3 to 5 p.m. out of concern for their children. WLP responds with convenient before- and after-school programs, based at child care centers and/or local schools. We also offer holiday and summer care at many of these locations. WLP is a leader in the industry offering these programs at over 1200 locations nationwide. Employees may utilize a 24/7 centralized, toll-free number to arrange placement. RESEARCH STATEMENT "My research focuses on how children's experiences in their families and in alternate care settings influence development. Much of my current research examines how variations in quality and quantity of child-care, including after-school care, contribute to children's social, emotional, and cognitive development. A second major research interest pertains to children's social relationships. Over the past 20 years, I have examined the connections between children's relationships with their mothers, fathers, siblings, peers and teachers. I am currently studying the impact of parent-child and sibling relationships on children's peer social competence." REPRESENTATIVE PUBLICATIONS Children's Social Relationships Vandell, D. L. (2000). Collaborative effort is a big hitÂ…especially with the kids Fourth and fifth graders from six elementary schools in Decatur are playing and learning together at their very own Big Kids Club, after school. Guided by teachers and often assisted by student volunteers from Agnes Scott College, the students learn about the environment at a local community garden, complete homework assignments and even explore software programs for Web design, movie-making and multimedia presentations. The City Schools of Decatur, Decatur Recreation and Community Services Department, Agnes Scott College and United Way are delivering innovative after-school programs to middle school and elementary school students. Educational studies show that children who are involved in productive activities after school are less likely to use alcohol and drugs, engage in sexual activity and be victims of crime. "Not only are students building social skills, expanding their world and having fun just being children, but they are also showing up in school each day with their homework completed," explains Lisa Shaw, Director of the Decatur Recreation and Community Services Department.

Increase Investments in After-School In 2000, over three-quarters (79 percent) of women with children ages six to 17 were in the labor force, and the majority of these women worked full-time. About 31.6 million children between the ages of six and 17 lived in families where their mother was in the labor force. Nearly 7 million children are left home alone each week. Far too many school-age children are left to care for themselves, placing them at greater risk for a range of problems, including school failure and risk-taking behaviors.
  • Juveniles are more likely to be the victims of violent crime in the hour after the end of the school day than at any other hour of the day.
  • A study found that eighth-graders left home alone report much greater use of cigarettes, alcohol, and marijuana than children not left home alone.
  • A 1999 study that examined the effects of self-care among urban children in low-income families found that children who spent more time home alone in third grade displayed more behavior problems both in third grade and later when they reached fifth grade.
