44. Water Q&A: Water Chemistry
water Q A chemistry and water Select a question that interests you (1) Q Why does my water smell like rotten eggs? A You would know it if you had this problem!
http://ga.water.usgs.gov/edu/qachemical.html
Select a question that interests you:
  • Why does my water smell like rotten eggs?
  • Why does it take so long to rinse the soap off my hands?
  • How does our swimming pool stay so clean?
  • Why is our porcelain sink stained brown?
  • Why are some lakes I see full of algae and thick plants?
  • Why does my drinking water look cloudy sometimes?
    (1) Q: Why does my water smell like rotten eggs? A: You would know it if you had this problem! In some parts of the country, drinking water can contain the chemical hydrogen sulfide gas, which smells just like rotten eggs. This can occur when water comes into contact with organic matter or with some minerals, such as pyrite. The situation mostly occurs as ground water filters through organic material or rocks.
    (2) Q: Why does it take so long to rinse the soap off my hands? A: The terms "soft water" and "hard water" are important here. Water is said to be soft if it has a low concentration of calcium and magnesium ions in it, and hard water has a high concentration of calcium and magnesium. If you use soft water, the ions react with the soap you use to produce a residue that feels like it is hard to wash off. If you use hard water, you also will have a harder time working the soap up into a lather. Hard water is prevalent in some parts of the country, and sometimes water-softening chemicals that reduce the amount of calcium and magnesium are added to the water.

Structure of Water Back to Top
It can be quite correctly argued that life exists on Earth because of the abundant liquid water. Other planets have water, but they either have it as a gas (Venus) or ice (Mars). Recent studies of mars reveal the presence sometime in the past of running fluid, possibly water. The chemical nature of water is thus one we must examine as it permeates living systems: water is a universal solvent, and can be too much of a good thing for some cells to deal with. Water can exist in all three states of matter on Earth, while only in one state on our two nearest neighboring planets. The above graph is from http://www.crseo.ucsb.edu/IOM2/Triple_Point.html Water is polar covalently bonded within the molecule. This unequal sharing of the electrons results in a slightly positive and a slightly negative side of the molecule. Other molecules, such as Ethane, are nonpolar, having neither a positive nor a negative side. The difference between a polar (water) and nonpolar (ethane) molecule is due to the unequal sharing of electrons within the polar molecule. Nonpolar molecules have electrons equally shared within their covalent bonds.

Importance and biophysical properties of water.

    WATER
Shawn Huston WHY WATER? You're right if you think it's terribly difficult to select an aspect or two to discuss when the larger topic is water. There's all sorts of fascinating stuff! Everything from the role of the waters of hydration in antibody-binding to the effect of solvation for stabilizing protein structure to the dependence of water's dielectric and pH on temperature and pressure. This last topic is particularly exciting as we learn more about the thermophiles living at deep sea vents. And to paraphrase a guest I heard on a radio science-talk show recently, once we better understand the life living in our oceans, we'll be much better prepared to understand possible life on other planets. But most importantly, because the aqueous environment influences all of the chemistry that takes place in it, when you are discussing water you get to address just about anything, while still ostensibly focusing on the substance itself. Before we get to water at extremes of temperature and pressure, let's touch briefly on the oh so neglected role of water in our everyday life. And just to be sure we start out on a provocative note, let me here quote Felix Franks who told me
"Biochemistry is primarily the chemistry of water."

At this stage of the planning process we need a general idea of the water chemistry of your habitat. We do not need to have a professional lab analysis until we get to the final design. If you go to your local aquarium or pond shop, you will find a number of inexpensive test kits that will suit our purposes for describing your general water chemistry. Lately we have been using a very quick and convenient test kit from Jungle Laboratories called the "Quick Dip Pond Test Kit". (a new window will open. Let the window completely load before scrolling.) These are very handy litmus paper type strips our biologists can carry in their shirt pockets as long as they remain dry. We have provided a link to Jungle Labs for your convenience. There are other kits available; we use this one because of its convenience and comprehensive results. Be sure to follow all instructions carefully when testing your water! WHAT YOU ARE TESTING FOR At this stage we would like to see the following data: pH, Total Alkalinity, Hardness, Nitrate, and Nitrite. There are other values we will want to see later, but this is a good start. Later, in a professional analysis we will look at total phosphates, orthophosphates, several species of nitrogen and other few other elements depending on the location of the pond.

Box 173364, Denver, CO 80217-3364 Even when air and water are at the same temperature, water will "feel" distinctly colder to us. This difference is due to the much higher heat capacity of water than of air. Offered here is an interesting life science application of water's high heat capacity and its serious implications for the maintenance of body temperature and the prevention of hypothermia in warm-blooded animals.

RESEARCH REPORTS ... SEARCH The Center for Global Change Science CGCS ) at MIT was established in January, 1990, to address long-standing scientific problems that impede our ability to accurately predict changes in the global environment. The CGCS is interdisciplinary, involving both research and education , and builds on the long-established programs in meteorology oceanography hydrology chemistry , and satellite remote sensing carried out in the Schools of Science and Engineering at MIT. The CGCS , along with the MIT Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research CEEPR ), are the parent organizations of the MIT Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change , which involves significant cross-discipline interaction
The long-term goal of the CGCS is to utilize theory and observations to understand the basic processes and mechanisms controlling the global environment, and thereby to accurately predict environmental changes. Initial objectives involve a sustained program of basic scientific research focused on five fundamental processes in the global climate machine:
  • Convection, Atmospheric Water Vapor, and Cloud Formation
