CH 105 topics include beginning terminology, concepts, and laboratory techniques for organic/carbon chemistry. Also covered are the special nature of carbon bonding and the functional groups of organic compounds. Note: CH 105 is sometimes used as a preliminary course for those who need the Organic Chemistry sequence but want to start at a more elementary level. The following descriptions are more informal and are intended to supplement the catalog in helping students choose courses. CHEM 4411-3. Physical Chemistry with Biochemistry Applications 1 This class covers thermodynamics and chemical kinetics. It parallels the traditional physical chemistry course CHEM 4511, covering the same general topics but choosing examples from biochemistry to illustrate them. Either class satisfies the first half of the physical chemistry lecture requirement for either a biochemistry or a chemistry major. The prerequisites include three semesters of calculus and at least one semester of physics, preferably two, and at least one semester of organic chemistry. Taught in the fall semester only. Dr. Lappas received his B.Sc. (1988) in physics from the University of Crete , GREECE and his D.Phil. (1993) in chemical physics from the University of Sussex , UK. His thesis work focused on the physical properties of magnetic and (super)conducting layered copper oxides under the guidance of Prof. Kosmas Prassides. He conducted postdoctoral research (1993-1995) in solid state and materials chemistry of fullerenes and fullerides at Sussex University in close collaboration with the groups of Prof. K. Prassides and Prof. Sir Harold Kroto, FRS. Dr. Lappas served as a temporary Lecturer (1997-1998) in solid-state chemistry at Sussex University before coming at FO.R.T.H. RESEARCH INTERESTS The important area of solid state chemistry lies in the synthesis of new materials, followed by their physical characterisation, with the ultimate aim of developing a material which may be exploited: for example as a ceramic material, semiconductor, superconductor, optical material or heterogeneous catalyst. Research in Dr. Lappas's laboratory emphasises on the solid-state chemistry of new inorganic materials that are of optical, electronic and magnetic importance. Interest in these materials is aimed at compounds displaying new or enhanced physical properties and/or having novel structural frameworks. His research is geared towards systematic structure and property correlation studies to determine the origin of unusual physical phenomena associated with metal-insulator transitions, charge-density waves, magnetic ordering and possibly nonlinear optical behaviour.

Chemistry, Physics and Physical Science Courses All course offerings are contingent upon budgetary allocations, faculty resources, and enrollment figures and, unless otherwise indicated, are offered in accordance with student demand. To enroll in Chemistry/Physics courses at the 2000 level, students must have completed Basic English II. To enroll in Chemistry/Physics courses at the 3000 level, students must have completed English Composition I. To enroll in Chemistry/Physics courses at the 4000 level and beyond, students must be proficient in reading and writing. see also: 2002-2003 Course Schedule Chemistry is an experimental science. Classroom and laboratory work combine to form a unique, personalized education, which can lead to a successful career or entrance into medical, dental, graduate, or other professional schools. The Chemistry Department is located in Boone Science Hall, which houses the classrooms, laboratories, computers, and equipment necessary for the study of the natural sciences. Senior faculty, rather than student assistants, direct all laboratory and class instruction. Opportunities are available for independent study conducted individually or as a member of a research team. Research projects in areas such as pollution analysis, toxicity studies, chemical synthesis, computer simulations and chemical kinetics are encouraged for both lower and upper-division students. Summer research opportunities are also available. Internships can be designed to match individual backgrounds and interests.

Vision The Analytical Chemistry Lab develops or adopts validated methods for the quantification of drugs, their metabolites and endogenous compounds in biological samples to address pharmacokinetic, pathophysiological and toxicological questions. Particular emphasis is put on efficient development processes and on the adherence to international validation standards (e.g. FDA-approved criteria). Projects Within the Department´s focus on drug-drug interactions highly sensitive quantification assays for substrates of cytochrome P450 isoenzymes (e.g. CYP3A4) and ABC - transport proteins (e.g. p-glycoprotein) with limited bioavailability are being developed. Currently HIV protease inhibitors and loperamide are under investigation by LC/MS/MS in biological matrices and cell suspensions (from in vitro studies). The lab is also responsible for the determination of urinary metabolic ratios, which are used to phenotype enzymatic pathways (e.g. CYP2D6 polymorphism). Other tasks include the establishment of new procedures, the optimisation and automation of determination techniques and further improvement of the current high analytical standards.

Science Lab Techniques Measuring the volume of a liquid with a graduated cylindar: The surface of a liquid confined in a cylindar curves to form what is known as a meniscus . The meniscus of most liquids curves up the sides of the container, making the center of the curve appear lower than the edges. Mercury is one of very few exceptions - it curves down at the edges Since reading the meniscus at the top or at the bottom of the curve will make a difference in the volume measured, it is generally agreed to always read the bottom of the curve. It has graduations for delivering any number of exact volumes. Pipet There are several styles of fillers used to draw liquids into a pipet. HHS chemistry students use a standard pipet bulb, described in lab techniques below. Never draw a liquid into a pipet with your mouth. Pipet filler Used in conjunction with a vacuum connection to a water faucet to speed up filtration. Filter flask The Erlenmeyer flask is the most common flask in the HHS chemistry lab. It is used to contain reaction solutions. Erlenmeyer flask The rounded bottom of the florence flask makes it ideal for boiling liquids. It also makes this flask easy to tip over when sitting on the lab table. Florence flask The volumetric flask is used to make solutions. It has a precise graduation line in the neck of the flask. A solute is placed into the flask, then the solvent is used to bring the total volume up to the graduation.
