ORNL IS DEVELOPING "CHEMISTRY LAB ON A CHIP"
OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Dec. 12A `chemistry lab on a chip' might seem like a researcher's dream, but recent successes at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) suggest it could become a reality. The laboratory on a chip offers several potential advantages over conventional approaches to chemical analysis. It would automate preparation of chemicals for analysis, saving labor and protecting people from unnecessary chemical exposure. Also, the amount of chemical reagents on a chipsubstances needed to carry out chemical reactionswould be one-millionth of the typical volume used in a laboratory setting, thus minimizing chemical waste requiring disposal. In addition, because the miniaturized device has no moving parts, it should be more reliable and inexpensive enough to be disposable. Thanks to its greatly reduced size and weight, the microchip laboratory could be incorporated into hand-held devices for surveying waste sites or diagnosing a patient's disease in a physician's office. It could also be part of a small sensor used in chemical process pipes to monitor and control production in a factory.

JOIDES Resolution Chemistry Lab
The chemical laboratory aboard the JOIDES Resolution is a modern, state of-the-art shipboard facility providing an impressive capability for both organic and inorganic geochemical analyses. A primary responsibility of shipboard organic geochemists is to provide data on petroleum hydrocarbons for safety and environmental concerns. In addition, instrumentation is available for determination of source, amount, and maturity of organic matter; carbonate content; and total carbon, nitrogen and sulfur. Inorganic geochemists have a wide array of analytical instruments at their disposal for determination of a large range of interstitial water constituents that typically includes pH, alkalinity, chloride, calcium, magnesium, sulfate, potassium, strontium, sodium, manganese, phosphate, silica, and ammonium and others as desired. Two marine lab specialists provide dedicated, 24-hour technical support to the chemistry laboratory on most cruises.

Sitz (231-6315) The bachelor of science in biochemistry is designed to provide students with a thorough foundation in chemistry and biology and an appreciation of how these sciences are integrated. The plan of study prepares students for careers in medical, veterinary, agricultural, industrial biochemistry, or biotechnology. In addition, it provides the background for post-graduate studies in the life sciences or professional studies in medicine (including nursing), veterinary medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, or clinical chemistry.     What we're doing The Oxford VR Group is developing a three-dimensional simulated laboratory for the teaching of chemistry. This laboratory will be modelled using virtual reality techniques and it will contain interactive multimedia experiments. Essentially, the student will be able to move around the lab in a web browser window and choose to take part in experiments that are distributed around this virtual lab. Each experiment will make use of the latest multimedia technology. This will include:
    • digitised video and animations of the experiment being carried out; animated three-dimensional simulations of chemical objects (including molecules); interactive sections where the student will be required to work out what is going on and answer questions; and links to other useful internet sites relating to that topic.

A VRML source file will contain a definition for each object that appears in the environment with information about each objects location and attributes. Examples of objects include cubes, spheres, and more complex things such as text and lights. Solid objects can have textures applied to them. The key disadvantages with VRML are that it is difficult to produce realistic looking scenes (as these have to contain a lot of detail and textures), and that navigating in the scenes is sometimes awkward. On the plus side, simple VRML files use very little internet bandwidth and are an ideal way to transmit technical drawings and simple environments. The rotating

    1. Why do we do practical work?
    Dr. Stuart Bennett, The Open University The student perspective on practical work is that there is too much information to handle at once, incoherence in courses, divorce of theory and practice, and too limited time spent in the laboratory. Students read instructions line by line. Many vice-chancellors question the worth of such an expensive resource (building, fittings, instruments, staffing, materials etc.). Practical work should be viewed in the broader sense.
