Publications in 1997 Published materials in 1997 Neutron guide system at the Budapest Research Reactor Keywords: Guides; Neutron instruments; Supermirrors Abstract: The 10 MW research reactor was restarted after a full-scale refurbishment in 1993. An important task of the upgrading was the construction of a new experimental hall and three neutron guides have been installed for the instruments located in this area. The in-pile plug contains 25 x 100 mm section float glass optical elements coated with Ni. The guides of the same cross section have the following destination: NV1 has an interruption for the monochromator of a three-axis spectrometer and the prompt gamma activation analysisstation is installed in end position. The second guide serves only for the small-angle scattering device and the third one for a reflectometer being constructed. Laura L. Kiessling - Description of Research
Many biological processes depend on extracellular binding events. For example, cells sense stimuli from their environment, such as food or toxins, by binding soluble ligands. In addition, cell - cell recognition and adhesion depend on extracellular receptor - ligand interactions. Many of these processes depend on multivalent interactions in which multiple receptors bind to multiple ligand epitopes. Our research program focuses on understanding multivalent recognition events and using synthetic ligands to inhibit and/or facilitate cellular responses triggered by multivalent binding. Chemical synthesis is the underpinning of our studies as it provides access to unique ligands that can be used to explore these fundamental recognition processes. We have developed a general approach for the synthesis of multivalent ligands that can be tailored to investigate diverse recognition processes. Our strategy relies on the ring-opening metathesis polymerization, which facilitates the synthesis of linear ligands with multiple recognition elements. The assembly method offers a high degree of control over the ligand structure. Thus, the valency (i.e., the number of recognition epitopes) can be controlled without varying their presentation (i.e., the density). In addition, the multivalent ligands can be labeled with reporter groups or attached to surfaces. Access to a wide variety of multivalent ligands provides new opportunities to investigate important biological processes.
