R ESEARCH S ITE FOR E DUCATORS IN C HEMISTRY
With funding from the National Science Foundation the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Georgia Tech has established a Research Site for Educators in Chemistry (RSEC). The Chemistry Division of the NSF initiated the RSEC program in FY 1999, recognizing that faculty at undergraduate institutions who wish to conduct research and incorporate it into the curriculum at their institutions may be isolated from research institutions and advanced instrumentation and may find it difficult to keep up-to-date about advances in their fields. The RSEC program is intended to provide research opportunities for faculty at undergraduate institutions and to promote the integration of research and education at all involved institutions.
The College of Sciences at Georgia Tech had similar objectives when it, and the College of Computing, initiated a Faculty Development Program (FDP) for University System of Georgia science, mathematics, and computer science faculty. The RSEC extends the FDP to include chemistry faculty at private institutions in Georgia and minority institutions in contiguous states and provides for a number of enhancements to all participants.
A second RSEC program was established by the Department of Chemistry at the University of Tennessee in 1999. New sites have been funded in FY 2002 at the University of Minnesota (contact

Students are bored by science, right?
"My students love science," said Gina O'Bryan, a sixth-grade teacher at Eagle Rock Elementary School. "They see how excited I get, and by the end of the year, several of them want to be marine biologists."
"Science is my favorite subject to teach; the kids respond so well and love all the hands-on experiments," said Mary Sigala, a fifth-grade teacher at Evergreen Avenue Elementary School.
"The kids like coming to class, and when students are motivated, teachers have fewer discipline problems," said Stacy Sinclair, a teacher who just left the Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies for a research associate position with UCLA's Marine Science Center.
How did these teachers learned to make science so compelling to their students?
O'Bryan and Sigala are among more than 50 teachers from Los Angeles County schools participating in a nine-month marine science training program at UCLA designed to increase students' interest in the sciences.
The program - called "Science Standards with Integrative Marine Science" (SSWIMS), which was awarded a four-year, $1.9 million grant from the National Science Foundation - is motivating the teachers, who then motivate their students.

Teach physical science using the environment
When we think of sciences that relate to the environment, we often focus on life sciences. But that’s only part of the picture. The physical sciencesphysics, chemistry, geology, astronomy, meteorology, and so onare important, too. Consider, for example, that neither people nor protozoa nor anything else would exist without the sun, water, soil, rocks, nutrients, air, and other nonliving components of our environment. Our bodies follow the laws of physics and chemistry. Our habitats are shaped by gravity and weather. Even the moon and the stars figure in, turning the tide and guiding migrating animals. Many environmental issues, such as water pollution, energy conservation, and global climate change, are grounded in the physical sciences. Lessons on the environment provide a good opportunity to introduce physical science concepts. Similarly, many physical science lessons are an open door to environmental topics. Here are some ideas for blending the two:

General Information Understanding the Periodic Table of Elements is central to the study of Chemistry. Unfortunately many students dread learning about the table and see it as a "Poster Child" for the dull aspects of Chemistry. During class you may gave up at the table posted on the classroom wall and think you will be required to memorize the Table. Don't worry you don't need to memorize the table, just learn how to use it. The approach emphasized by this project is the use of the Table as a powerful tool. The title "Off the Wall" is meant to instill the idea that the Periodic Table is not just a poster hanging on the classroom wall collecting dust. You will utilize the resources of Internet, textbook, and expert advise to research the periodic table and develop a power point presentation designed to teach Advanced Integrated Science (AIS freshmen) students how to use the Table. In a sense you will not only be acting as a student (learner), but also as a teacher (a conveyer or knowledge and skills). Hopefully you will find that teaching a topic or skill leads to a deeper understanding of the topic.

Effective for the Spring 2002 semester, two important curricula changes have been implemented. These include combining the "two-track" Molecular and Physical Biochemistry curricula into a single track, and a revision in the requirements to obtain a Minor Biochemistry and/or Minors link as appropriate.
New courses in two chemically related areas will be offered to our students on a regular basis beginning in Fall 2000. One, a Special Topics course in Computer Aided Drug Design , will be offered by Dr. Randy Zauhar to introduce students to the power of this exciting area of chemistry. The computational tools discussed are used, for example, to predict drug-receptor interactions and also for genome sequence screening. Students will also have hands-on experience with a variety of powerful computers, including SGI Workstations and the Beowulf supercomputer available in our West Center for Drug Discovery (see below) as part of this course.

Clubs and Activities at DCHS The Dodge County High School Academic Bowl Team participated in the Macon State College Academic Tournament this Saturday in Macon. The team performed very well, finishing the preliminary rounds undefeated. They were knocked out of the playoffs in the quarter finals round in a tough match. Those participating were Waye Cartwright, Joe Helms, Jonathan King, Jason Smith, and Donnell Williams. The team’s next big event will be the State tournament in March at Baldwin County High School. Good luck to the Academic Indians. DCHS Anchor Club was recently selected to be the recipient of Wal-Mart’s annual Environmental Grant. Pictured above are Ms. Susan Underwood, Anchor Club advisor, Michelle Howell, Anchor Club president, Mr. Derrick Perry, Eastman Wal-Mart assistant manager, and Ms. Susan Long, DCHS Principal. Dodge County High School has a new environment. Through the hard work of many students and teachers, the generous donations of local businesses and individuals, the grants from the Environmental Education Alliance of Georgia and the Georgia Department of Education, the high school has a new butterfly garden. The butterfly garden is located in the front court yard just past the front lobby of the school. It contains a diversity of plants including butterfly bushes, lantana, black-eyed Susans, zinnias, azaleas, verbenas, and various bedding plants. In the center of the garden is a flowering crepe myrtle and one side of the garden is dominated by enormous evergreen. Already, several species of butterflies can be seen in the garden. Also, a website is under construction that will showcase the garden and its construction from the beginning until now.
