... > Venezuela Latin America is home to nearly half a million Jews. JDC began working with the Jewish communities of Latin America prior to World War II, when we were seeking safe havens for and helping resettle European Jews who were fleeing the gathering Nazi storm. Following the war, we opened an office in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Today, it serves as our base of operations in Latin America. Many Jewish communities in Latin America are financially self-sufficient. Thus, JDC's primary goal is to provide strategic planning and technical assistance in any area of Jewish community development. Over the years, we have assisted virtually every community in Latin America with some aspect of Jewish education, outreach or communal development. Another way in which we assist Latin America's Jewish communities is through our specialized training programs and seminars for lay and professional Jewish leaders. We encourage regional cooperation and networking and provide a global Jewish perspective. In times of crisis, JDC reacts immediately. Following Argentina's economic collapse, JDC responded with programs offering emergency financial assistance and technical support. When the Castro regime eased religious restrictions in Cuba late in 1991, the first call from the president of the community was to JDC.

Facing Central America on the west they separate the Caribbean Sea from the Atlantic Ocean. To the west, the Greater Antilles (Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Cuba) are believed to be the remnants of an ancient Central American mountain chain; to the east, the Lesser Antilles, a chain of smaller volcanic and limestone islands are extending north-south from the Virgin Islands to Grenada. The Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago and numerous islands lie close to the continental coasts of Florida, Venezuela, and Central America (see map T o these we must add the Guyana (Guyana, Surinam and French Guyana) which, though mainland territories, are culturally part of the Caribbean world. In fact, as remarked David Lowenthal (West Indies Societies 1972, p.3) "yet like West Indies proper, the Guyana are really insular; virtually unpopulated swamp, savanna and rain-forest interiors isolate their inhabited coastal fringes form Brazil and Venezuela." Travelers to Central and South America are usually welcomed with courtesy and warmth. There is great diversity in the region. You can visit major cosmopolitan cities, ruins of great ancient civilizations, primeval tropical rainforests and breathtaking locales. However, there are important things that you should know before you travel. That is why we have prepared this publication. We wish you an enjoyable and memorable journey. Please note that travel to Mexico and the Caribbean are covered in their own publications. Please refer to the last page of this pamphlet for further details. DEPARTMENT OF STATE PUBLICATION 10407

They also provide addresses and emergency telephone numbers for U.S. embassies and consulates in the subject country. In general, the sheets do not give advice. Instead, they describe conditions so travelers can make informed decisions about their trips.

The Latin American Library, located on the fourth floor of Tulane's Howard-Tilton Memorial Library , is one of the world's foremost collections of source materials in Latin American archaeology, anthropology, history, linguistics, art, architecture, film, women's studies, economics and many other subject areas. The collection was established in 1924 by the predecessor of the Middle American Research Institute . The initial focus was the archaeology, anthropology and history of Mesoamerica but after the collection was relocated to Howard-Tilton in the early 1960s, the scope was broadened to cover most subject disciplines and all of Latin America and the Caribbean. The collection is one of the most comprehensive of its kind, and includes materials from the pre-Conquest to the present day. Tulane's Latin American holdings amount to more than 400,000 volumes, with the Latin American Library accounting for about eighty percent of those. The Latin American literature collection is housed on the second floor and on the lakeside of the fourth floor, the Latin American science collection on the first floor, and the Architecture, Law, Medicine and Business libraries each collect Latin American materials in their respective fields. Colombia stretches over approximately 1,140,000 sq. km, roughly equal to the area of Portugal, Spain, and France put together. Colombia occupies the northwestern end of South America, and is the only country there with coasts on both the Pacific (1350 km long), and the Atlantic (over 1600 km.) Three Andean ranges run north and south through the western half of the country (about 45% of the total territory.) The eastern part is a vast lowland which can be generally divided into two regions: a huge open savannah on the north, and the amazon in the south (400,000 sq. km aprox.)
