The Castle Lapidarium is located on the I. castle courtyard courtyard under the northern wing of the New Burgrave's House . The Lapidarium interior is at basement level from the north, while from the south it is deep under the level of the courtyard. This Lapidarium, together with the cellars of Prague Castle, is unique in the castle architecture of all of Central Europe. Created with the financial support of the Czech Minister of Culture and the firm Ipix The main cellar area, originally unified, is 48 m long and 8.5 meters high, while the wagon vault of the cellar is 4.6 m high at its peak. The room has retained its Renaissance appearance up to the present. In the 16th century the cellars served as stables, and according to archival information up to one hundred horses could have been kept here. The window segments are five-sided, confirming the Renaissance origin of these rooms which were built around 1580. The western part of the cellars were modified by a younger Baroque wall which now divides the area. There is access to other cellar spaces from the eastern side which, as archival sources indicate, were used as a prison in the 19th century. The present-day entrance to the cellars is original, and was separated from the I. courtyard by a moat in the 16th century. This moat was localised during archaeological excavations in 1997 in the area of today's

In 200 gorgeous color photographs of a vast repertoire of residences, inside and out, this glossy, handsome tome traces the development of domestic stone architecture in the United States. Stone has inspired American builders for more than three centuries, and today's architects continue to refer to the traditional construction methods and regional styles that connect stone structures to their natural surroundings. Providing general descriptions of featured styles and building techniques, as well as intriguing personal histories of the private homes, the informative text crosses the country as it covers everything from Dutch colonial farm houses to eclectic Victorian mansions to whimsical stone cottages to modernist expressions by Frank Lloyd Wright and others. Customer Reviews: The Magic Of Stone
Stone was the first material used for shelter. It can be (and has been) assembled in any number of creative, aesthetically pleasing ways. Stone Houses takes us on a wondrous tour of many of the possibilities inherent to this medium of construction. "Whether cottage or ch¢teau, cabin or castle, stone houses embody feelings of romance and the picturesque. Their walls speak of permanence and history; their stones give whispered accounts of their prehistoric creation. They are an ongoing part of what Tennyson referred to as 'the eternal landscape of the past.' "

Via the picturesque Golden Lane and magnificent and vibrant Charles Bridge, built in 1357, one is transported into Kafka*s world of mysterious network of alleyways which opens up to the beautiful Old Town Square with its completely restored gothic architecture including the then technically advanced Astronomical Clock Due to its important role in European history, being the capital of the Holy Roman Empire for example, it has been able to benefit from incoming trade and some of the leading architects of their time especially from the gothic and renaissance period. It is also together with many other towns in the Czech Republic one of the few cities to survive the second world war and similar destructive wars relatively unharmed. Architecture Shrines Simplicity was the essence of the earlier Shinto shrines in Japan. The natives believe that the Japanese kami (gods) inhabit all natural phenomena such as volcanoes and rocks; these sacred places were thus marked with only a shimenawa (special plaited rope) and gohei (strips of white paper). The shimenawa will lead one to fences and on to the torii gates, which are now common features of a shrine. The architecture of these shrines comes in many varieties, but most were developed from storehouses and dwellings of prehistoric Japan. A pair of komainu (stone 'lion') guards the main path leading to the shrine. One will have its mouth open in a roar while the other has its mouth closed.

http://www.amasya.gov.tr/amasya/castle.html
Introduction General Transportation King's Valley ... Projects CASTLES AMASYA CASTLE
The castle is located on the Harþena Mountain and it constitutes a natural defense shield. The inner part of the castle was made out of cut stone, and the outer walls were made of stones. It has eight defense levels. There is a secret passage in the castle, called "Cilanbolu" which was built in ancient times and is located on the pinnacle of the castle. Cilanbolu has 150 stairs that were carved downwards through the foot of the mountain. It is known that the stairs ended near the river to be able to escape easily in the times of war and also to draw water.
GÖKÇELÝ CASTLE
It is in Gökçeli village on Castle Mountain District. There is a mound and a little "POTERN" in the castle. One can reach them descending the stairs and there are small nishes in it. It shows Post-Roman characteristics.
KALEKÖY CASTLE
It is 40 miles far from the city centre, on the Amasya-Tokat highway. One can reach its citadel from a mountain passage located at the northern part of the castle. Ramparts and towers are made of cut stones and its original form is still remained. There is a 3,5 m deep and wide stairway of rampart cistern, which was made by carving the main rock with a slope angle of 45 degrees. There are rock graves which resemble the Amasya Rock Tombs of Pontic Kings on the south-eastern foot of the castle. The castle was used as a garrison by the Romans. It is one of the few Roman Castles that remained today.

Avg. Customer Review: Covering Europe during the Middle Ages, Castles and Fortresses opens with a compact but informative chapter on the evolution of the castle. The book then chronicles the political histories of Europe's various regions and how castles formed according to their military needs. Though the text is a bit general, the book's large color photographs speak volumes. The pictures are bright and crisp, shot from wide and aerial angles, capturing the majesty of these fabled, architectural masterpieces and the lovely scenery surrounding them. Among the more renowned castles featured are the Warwick Castle in England, Chateau Chinon in France, Neuschwanstein in Germany, and Miramar Castle in Italy. Brief coverage is given to western Asia (the Kremlin in Moscow, for example) and North America. A glossary and bibliography are also included. Karen Karleski
