GOVERNMENT WELCOMES SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING SKILLS REPORT BY SIR GARETH ROBERTS
Link to final report by Sir Gareth Roberts Britain must encourage more young people to study science and engineering or face a future skills shortfall, according to a new report published today. The Roberts Report, commissioned by the Treasury, Department of Education and Skills, and the Department of Trade and Industry examines the supply of scientists and engineers in the UK. It finds emerging shortages in the supply of high-level mathematics, physics, chemistry and engineering skills – due to increasing demand by employers for these skills and due to fewer students choosing to take these subjects at A level, and also later at university. Sir Gareth Roberts, President of the Science Council, also identifies particular issues in schools, further and higher education, and in the attractiveness of jobs in research and development that are contributing to these shortages. Handing over the report to the Government today, Sir Gareth said:

The way we live changes continually as we reap the benefits of rapidly improving technology. Like technology, law also touches virtually every aspect of our lives and often interacts with technology. Technology makes television possible, but the law increasingly determines such things as the technical specifications of a broadcast license, the privacy rights of "newsworthy" individuals and the necessary compensation for creators of musical scores and screenplays.
Sometimes, as with photocopiers and computers, technology influences the practice of law. More often, however, it is the other way around. Also, in our complex society, lawyers and technologists must cooperate in addressing many important questions. Were the shreds of "pot" found in the car really tobacco? Careers What is B2B? Career Opportunities Request Information Publications Listing ... People in the Industry There are many career opportunities available in business publishing, including: editors, writers, sales personnel, publishers, circulation managers, promotion managers, show managers, website designers, art directors, seminar coordinators, direct mail specialists, production and prepress managers, bookkeepers and clerical staff.
Business publishing companies tend to be flexible in their relationships with employees. They encourage entrepreneurship, they promote on merit and they reward great new ideas. Staffing of individual business publications varies widely, from one or two people on bi-monthlies or quarterlies, to a hundred working on Canada's largest business weeklies. However, most publications are produced monthly by a staff of about half-a-dozen who work closely together and can see their ideas through from start to finish. Individual contributions to the success of the enterprise can be quickly recognized and rewarded. The intimate relationship between a business publication, its readers and its advertisers, makes working in the business press extremely satisfying. In the area of circulation, which controls publication distribution, in advertising sales (the prime source of revenue), or as a member of the creative/production team, all staff play an important role in the efficient and profitable design, production and distribution of business publications. Many "perks" stem from working in the business press, including regular exposure to the business leaders in your field, travel to trade shows and seminars in Canada, the U.S. and, sometimes, elsewhere in the world. As they become established, many business press employees find that they gain great respect from business leaders within the industries they serve.

Loh Hui Yin in Hangzhou, The Business Times, 27th August, 2002 ABOUT 10 Chinese companies are expected to list on the Singapore Exchange over the next 12 months, with the number building up to 20 listings a year in the next couple of years as momentum picks up. Retail and infrastructure companies are among the offerings that are in the pipeline for a listing in the coming months, said SGX's head of listings, Philip Chan, here yesterday. There are now 18 China stocks on the SGX, of which four - including People's Food and United Food - were listed last year. There has been no listing so far this year. More Articles

Companies on SGX's target list would not be the huge state-owned enterprises but rather the smaller, privately-owned companies that would have a market capitalisation of US$50 million and below.
