"But what is government itself, but the greatest of all reflections on human nature?"
James Madison and Alexander Hamilton Why Study Political Science?
Many students like yourself want to know how governments are organized, how rules are made, and how government influences the amount and distribution of social rewards. As a citizen you may want to know how to wield influence and change rules or outcomes, either through government or in other political situations. You may wish to work in government or in the many organizations that are regulated by and try to influence government. Any of these purposes can be served by a greater understanding of politics. The study of political science helps to prepare you for the exercise of your rights, duties, and opportunities as citizens. Courses in politics can lead you to a fuller understanding of various areas such as American government institutions, legislative processes, foreign policy, international relations, public law, and political theory.

Law touches nearly every facet of our daily lives, from the goods our dollars can buy to the way we pursue our work and enjoy our leisure. Our laws are based on and reflect the basic values of the society in which we live. How do social, political, philosophical, and economic considerations influence and reflect these laws? Questions such as these encourage us to look at the complexity of the law within society and its institutions. Why Legal Studies?
While professional legal training in the United States is reserved for American law schools, the study of law as a part of a society and its culture is an important component of a liberal arts education. At PLU Legal Studies is an interdisciplinary program of study focusing on the nature of law and judicial process. Consistent with the purposes of the American Legal Studies Association, a Minor in Legal Studies provides alternative approaches to the study of law drawn from classes in social sciences, humanities, the arts, business, and education. Your professors emphasize the development of a critical understanding of the functions of law, the sources of the legal tradition, and the mutual impacts of law and society. You will pursue these objectives through courses, directed research, and internships in offices and agencies involved in making, enforcing, interpreting, and communicating "the law" in contemporary American civil society.

Possible Careers Some of today's Political Science majors will be tomorrow's lawyers and judges. Others will be in businessbecause corporations need people who understand the workings of politics, government, and other forms of social organization. If the past is any guide, there will also be political science graduates in marketing research, law enforcement, public relations, labor relations, foreign service, teaching, and social work. Writers, editors, government officials at all levels, real estate brokers, lobbyists, insurance underwriters, human resources managers (what companies used to call "personnel directors") will include a number of political science graduates. Political Science is a great major for future politiciansboth full-time professionals and citizen activists. Many politicians are lawyers, and a political science major offers an excellent preparation for law school. Why? First, because in Liberal Arts you develop important intellectual tools that law schools prize. Second, because the political science major who becomes a lawyer understands where the law fits in the broader American system. Political science offers ways of understanding how attorneys, judges, and civil and criminal systems fit together and work. Future lawyer or not, if you are a political science major who gets involved in politics, you'll find that an LMU education has prepared you to understand how the system works and how to get things done. You will also be well prepared to think about how things should be doneto tell the difference between good and bad policies and choices, and how to work for positive change.

The subjects of political science and sociology are interesting to most students, dealing as they do with issues that often impact their lives. These include concerns about environmental health, the nature and causes of violence in homes and schools, the influence of money in political campaigns, and how government agencies operate. In their desire to understand and influence public policy, a large number of students have graduated from Texas Lutheran with degrees in political science (200+), and sociology (125+) during the past three decades.
Many political science and sociology students have become involved in student government at TLU, and go on to careers in public service, including leadership in their own churches and communities. Many majors in these fields have an interest in law, and quite a few have become attorneys and judges, legislators or legislative aids, or obtained positions in the field of criminal justice or social work. Others have become teachers, especially at the high school level. Some have gone on to graduate school, especially in public administration, and some have earned doctorates.

Introduction. The study of political science has value in several different ways. First, all citizens need to understand the nature of government even if they have no professional interest in political science. Second, a fair amount of knowledge of politics is indispensable for those who hope to play leading roles in any sector of society. Finally, there are some careers for which extensive training in political science is extremely useful. This is true especially for those hoping to seek careers in higher education, the legal profession, state and local government, urban planning, the federal civil service, journalism, lobbying groups, or the proliferating organizations that monitor political processes and policies. Political science will help any student develop reasoning and analytical skills and build competence in oral and written expression. In addition, the Department of Political Science offers opportunities for students to acquire skills in statistical analysis and computer usage. These skills and aptitudes will be useful to students no matter what their ultimate career choices may be. Particularly when it is increasingly common that people change jobs several different times during their lives, the ability to think, read, and write become the indispensable foundation for adapting to change in the world of work.

These include concerns about environmental health, the nature and causes of violence in homes and schools, the influence of money in political campaigns, and the impact of international trade on wages and jobs. In their desire to understand and influence public policy, more than 400 students have graduated from Texas Lutheran with degrees in economics (75+), political science (200+), and sociology (125+) during the past three decades. Many economics, political science, and sociology students have become involved in student government at TLU, and go on to careers in public service, including leadership in their own churches and communities. Others have become teachers, especially at the high school level. Many have gone on to graduate school, especially in public administration, and some have earned doctorates. Several have found management positions in business. Economics . Perhaps the most analytically demanding of the subjects in this area, the study of economics may also be the most rewarding, especially for the serious student who truly wants to understand some of the most basic forces in society and government.
