Marine Biology is a multidisciplinary field of study, linking Biology and the predominantly physico-chemical discipline of Oceanography. Consequently, investigations range from studies of physico-chemical and microbiological processes, to macrobiological processes and the impact of humans on these processes and on marine resources. Entrance Requirements: In addition to general University and Faculty entrance requirements: Stage (4-yr course): A2-level Biology or Chemistry and at least GCSE Biology and Chemistry or Double Award Science Stage 1 (3-yr course): A2-level grades AB or BCC, including Biology and Chemistry (both to at least AS-level grade C) plus GCSE Mathematics Course Content: Stage 0: students study Biology (2 modules), Chemistry (2 modules) and 2 modules in subjects of their choosing.

A comprehensive list of information about careers in oceanography, marine science, and marine biology is available through the Scripps Institution of
http://oceanography.palomar.edu/links/Careers.html
Careers in Oceanography Many people associate careers in oceanography as consisting of swimming with marine animals at a marine life park or snorkeling in crystal-clear tropical waters studying coral reefs. In reality, these kinds of jobs are extremely rare and there is intense competition for the few jobs that do exist. Most oceanographers work in fields that use science to solve a particular problem in the ocean. Some examples include:
  • What is the role of the ocean in limiting the greenhouse effect? What kinds of pharmaceuticals can be found naturally in marine organisms? How does sea-floor spreading relate to the movement of tectonic plates? What economic deposits are there on the sea floor? Can rogue waves be predicted? What is the role of longshore transport in the distribution of sand on the beach? How does a particular pollutant affect organisms in the marine environment?
Preparation for a Career in Oceanography
Preparing yourself for a career in oceanography is probably one of the most interesting and rewarding (yet difficult) paths to travel. The study of oceanography is typically divided into different academic disciplines (or sub-fields) of study. The four main disciplines of oceanography are:
  • Geological oceanography is the study of the structure of the sea floor and how the sea floor has changed through time; the creation of sea floor features; and the history of sediments deposited on it.

MacLean Marine Science Center Acedemics Marine Biology Major The University of the Virgin Islands is one of the few institutions in the United States offering an undergraduate major in marine biology. As the program develops, specialized field courses in chemical and physical oceanography, marine geology and marine instrumentation will be added. It is anticipated that the growing recognition for marine technicians will result in expanded career opportunities for those who complete the undergraduate program. Students in this program also will be prepared for graduate work. The Marine Biology major is designed to prepare students for a wide variety of careers. Students wishing to become marine technicians in either government or private sector should take, as a minimum, courses listed in categories A, B and C below. Marine Biology majors preparing for careers such as secondary teaching or environmental management should take courses in A, B and C along with courses from appropriate disciplines (e.g., teacher education or business administration). For those planning careers in marine research or college teaching, advanced studies will be necessary. In order to prepare for graduate school, students should select French (or German, if available) for fulfillment of the foreign language requirement and should take mathematics and chemistry courses beyond the minimum required for the Marine Biology major (see category D below).

Hi I'm Guy and I'm interested in doing marine biology when I'm older and I was wondering what I need to concentrate on more at school or if I can ask my teacher to help me and also could you send me some info please? Thanks Guy Hi Guy, Thanks for your e-mail. Great to hear that your interested in becoming a marine biologist. All I can say is work hard at the sciences at school and get the best grades you possibly can. Find out if there are any research laboratories near you where you could perhaps work for a couple of weeks during your summer holidays. Also ask your teacher if she/he has heard of the CREST Award scheme, this is an excellent way to gain first hand experience in scientific research and you can even win an award at the end! For more information look at the CREST website - www.crest.org.uk Regards Liz Cook (Marine Biologist) I am 12 years old. I have always wanted to be a
