Introduction
Programs in secretarial studies and office administration intend to prepare people to perform the duties of administrative assistants, secretaries, receptionists, court reporters, and office managers. Programs vary greatly in length, from courses in individual skills, such as receptionist, to four-year bachelor's degree programs in office administration or office management. A large number of community colleges, and an even larger number of private business and training schools offer programs of various lengths, designed to teach office skills. Many programs concentrate on teaching the skills needed for working in particular kinds of offices such as legal offices, medical offices, real estate offices, or travel agencies. Some programs concentrate on preparing people to take the government clerical examination. A few four-year colleges and universities offer four-year bachelor's degree programs in office administration. These programs are designed to prepare administrative assistants and executive secretaries for management responsibilities.

Leicester
The Leicester office is currently the main office for the Society, where all but 6 of the permanent staff are employed. It is intended that 'regional' offices will most likely be permanently established; 'pilot' arrangements commenced in 2000 with offices in Belfast, Cardiff and Glasgow, with part-time administrative support staff being appointed on fixed-term contracts. A Georgian property was purchased in London in 1999, and has become a venue for Society meetings; two administrative staff currently support the running of the office as a meetings venue, whilst our Parliamentary Officer and one Scientific Officer use the building as a London base. Final decisions on the functions to be performed long-term at these offices have not yet been taken.
The Society staff are organised into five Directorates, each containing a number of specialist teams. Principal units and staff within the Leicester office are:

Admissions , which deals with the vetting of all the applications received for individual membership at every level; as well as the customer relations skills to deal with applicants, sometimes in circumstances of imparting disappointing news, the staff are administrators and clerical/secretarial.
