Last check and updated 08/02 CLCI: AV The 21st Century work place - areas of change! Part-time working
In 1999, 25% of all employees were part-time workers, compared to 21% of employees at the beginning of the decade. Women were in 80% of the part-time jobs by 1999, although men had increased their share of part-time employment from 10% in 1991 to 20%..
There has also been an increase in the number of temporary and fixed-term employment contracts. 7% of all UK workers are currently employed on temporary contracts. People in professional occupations are more likely to be employed on temporary contracts than other occupational groups.
These changes effect not only those employees involved in the new work patterns but also on the role of managers who are increasingly expected to manage mixed groups of employees who have different needs and expectations about work. This requires new ways of managing.
Job Security
At the end of the 1990s the average 'life' of a job was just over five years, compared to just under five years in 1975. However, this apparent stability masks some significant shifts. Job security has decreased amongst younger workers (those aged under 25 years) and older workers (those aged over 50 years) whilst it has increased amongst the 25-49 age group. It has been reported that despite widespread perceptions to the contrary the likelihood of being made redundant has changed little over recent years, suggesting that much insecurity is imagined rather than actual!

posts that previously were purely administrative, clerical or secretarial are gaining agood taster for people thinking about healthcare management careers.

Healthcare Management Careers Information Introduction The healthcare management sector is large and varied - a typical healthcare manager could quite easily be a manager running a GP's surgery or a chief executive controlling a large hospital with a budget of millions. The sheer number and range of opportunities in healthcare management makes it difficult for the Institute to offer detailed careers advice. Career paths for healthcare managers are varied. It is possible to enter healthcare management at all the major stages - post-16, post-18 and post-college/university. It is also a career particularly suited to mature entry ; entry requirements are often relaxed for those with management experience elsewhere. It is also common to enter healthcare management after some experience in the voluntary or social care sectors. Many people now come into healthcare management from a clinical or medical administration background and are supported in their move into management by various initiatives and reforms. For certain specialist roles within healthcare management other organisations can provide you with information - see the specialist roles section.

As a graduate with a good degree from SBS, a variety of careers will be open to you (see the Figure below, and the sub-section 'Careers in Biological Sciences'). There are careers for which a Biological Sciences degree is essential, and careers for which Biological Sciences provides a useful base. In addition, there are careers open to graduates and postgraduates from any discipline. These include, for example, careers in management training, accountancy, teaching, nursing, social work, the police and the armed forces. However, employers are usually looking for general or transferable skills, and a Biological Sciences degree arguably provides a unique combination of these.

International advertising is a highly specialized activity. Its prime purpose, of course, is to promote the sale of American products overseas. Since the latter are sold throughout the world, all of the major and some of the lesser languages are of importance. Positions for which companies find foreign language ability necessary or desirable include:
    • Import-Export Agent
    • Marketing Coordinator
    • Overseas Personnel Manager
    • Copywriter
    • Purchasing Agent
    • Executive Assistant
    • Trade Analyst
    • Air Traffic Assistant
    • Buyer
    • Interpreter/Translator
As international business and industry expand, international banking and financial activity naturally follows. Today one fourth of all new direct investment goes abroad. This increased emphasis on the international financial market is accom panied by a growing need for foreign language skills. The variety of positions involved in this area include:
