Md. Resident Wins Only Medal for U.S.
The work wasn't over for Dana Chladek after she won her silver medal in white-water kayaking, nor was the competition. After medal ceremonies along the roaring Ocoee River in Tennessee came a news conference. As the wiry blonde from Kensington, Md., sat between Czech gold medalist Stepanka Hilgertova and French bronze medalist Myriam Fox-Jerusalmi, Chladek chatted easily on one side in Czech and on the other in French. Chladek's medal run saved the highly regarded U.S. team from a shutout. Two Golds in Two Days for Doktor
Czech canoeist Martin Doktor won two gold medals in two days, and Italy's Antonio Rossi picked up his second consecutive gold medal on the last day of the Olympics. Slavomir Knazovicky of Slovakia

Caroline Brunet second in delayed Olympic kayaking final
A nightmare day ended in silver Sunday for Caroline Brunet. The world champion from Lac Beauport, Que., had to stew more than five hours when winds postponed the Olympic canoe-kayak schedule. When the competitors finally got to race in the 500-metre kayak final, she was upset by Italy's Josefa Idem Guerrini.-October 1, 2000 Brunet solos to silver, finishes fifth with partner
She waited four long years, but in the end Canada's eight-time world kayaking champion could do no better than she did in Atlanta.A silver medallist. Caroline Brunet has to settle for being an Olympic bridesmaid once again. Somehow, it just doesn't sound right for the woman who hadn't lost a K1 500 race in more than two years and is referred to as the "queen of kayaking." -October 1, 2000 Langford defeated by whitewater course
It was a bitter pill for whitewater kayaker Margaret Langford to swallow. She dreamed of a medal, but instead she got a mouthful of water and sad memories of finishing in 13th place at the Sydney Olympics Monday. - Septmber 18, 2000

Prime paddling spots
  • Belfair - Lynch Cove and the north shoreline of Hood Canal offer generally quiet waters, often warm enough for capsizing drills (what one local paddler calls "synchronized swimming practice"). Launch at Belfair State Park or, for a longer paddle and a developed boat launch, Twanoh State Park.
  • Sinclair Inlet - Some great urban paddling can be found within minutes of the spot where many West Sound residents work. Perhaps that's why it is frequently overlooked, but the bay by the shipyard makes for some great exploration and could give you a different perspective on a familiar sight. Explore the Gorst shoreline at high tide, for example. Launch in Bremerton, Port Orchard or Annapolis.
  • Dyes Inlet - On breezy days, you can hide out in Ostrich, Phinney, Oyster or Chico bays and when the water is calm, paddle all of Dyes Inlet from Silverdale to Tracyton. Launch at the county park at Silverdale or at the Tracyton or Chico ramps.

Canoe/Kayak First Olympic Appearance: 1924
by Gerry Brown FIRST OF ALL, there are some basic differences between canoes and kayaks. The canoe paddler kneels to paddle while the kayaker paddles sitting down . Also, a canoe paddle has a flat blade on only one end of the paddle shaft while the kayak paddle is equipped with a curved blade on each end. When you watch the Games also notice that the slalom canoes, unlike regular canoes, are decked , meaning there is a spray skirt that keeps water out of the boat. Also, the slalom canoes and kayaks are shorter and wider than their sprint counterparts in order to be more maneuverable.
Did You Know?
The four-person sprint kayaks can reach speeds fast enough to pull a water-skier.
There are two distinct disciplines in the canoe/kayak competitions: slalom and sprint . The dramatic slalom competitions are held on whitewater while sprints are flat out races on flat water. The slalom didn't make its Olympic debut until in Munich and because of the costs associated with building the courses it didn't return until Barcelona in . It can be tough to find a naturally occurring course suitable for the events. In fact, Atlanta

Sydney 2000 Olympics - Sports Menu - Website accessibility
Demonstration showing two options for implementing Website accessibility guidelines in the menu of sports
By Tom Worthington
http://www.tomw.net.au/2000/sports.html The purpose of this document is to demonstrate methods for implementing Website accessibility guidelines for the Olympic games web site . Specifically methods to provide a text alternative for the menu of sports is shown.
Option 1: ALT Text on the existing image map
In this implementation, a ALT tag with the name of the sport is added to each rectangular region of the existing image map. As an example, alt="Archery" is added to the first area: < AREA shape="rect" coords="1,1,80,12" href=http://www.olympics.com/eng/sports/AR/home.html" alt="Archery" There is no change in the appearance of the menu for most users. However, the effect of including the ALT tags is that a browser can display the text labels in place of the graphics, if required:
Option 2: Simple text menu supplementing or replacing the existing image map
Simple hypertext links are used for the name of each sport: Archery These instructions could be used in a simple list of sports, or in a table as show below. The list has been changed to run alphabetically across the columns, rather than down, to aid braille readers (which read one line of horizontal text at a time). The colour of the table background and text can be changed to match that of the current graphic. However, those colours may be difficult for some people to read:
