Newton ready to make
mark at games
He's considered a
top U.S. contender for a medal
By Cindy Luis

It's no longer "whodaguy" when Peter Newton hits the water. The Hawaii-born Newton needed all of two years in a kayak before making the 1992 Olympic team, stunning the international paddling community. He and fellow Hui Nalu paddler Mike Harbold finished eighth in the K-2 in Barcelona. Four years and countless strokes later, Newton has a new partner and a new attitude. Experience will do that. "Making the Olympic team the first time was real exciting but even I was surprised," said the 1988 Our Redeemer Lutheran graduate. "Maybe I didn't have the confidence I should have had because I wasn't expecting to be there. This time, I feel like I have a lot more experience and confidence. "It's the first time my partner (John Mooney) and I are racing together so I can't tell exactly what our chances are. We want to make the finals and, once we do that, I think we have a chance to get into the medal placings." The U.S. Canoe/Kayak Team press kit predicts that the Newton-Mooney pair, competing at 1,000 meters, has one of America's best shots at a medal. Newton became the first American to win three kayak medals in the Pan American Games last year and Mooney is the defending world sprint champion at 200 meters.

Puakea will finally
get to Olympics
It took 10 long years but he has
reached his goal
By Cindy Luis
Star-Bulletin
There will be parts of John Puakea all around Lake Lanier, Ga., in the next few weeks. The Kaneohe canoe paddler-turned-boat builder has brought 10 of his kayaks to the waters of the Olympic canoe-kayak venue northeast of Atlanta for use by the U.S. canoe-kayak sprint team. It took nearly 10 years, but Puakea has finally reached his goal of getting to the Games. "I've been hired to be in charge of renting the 70 new boats to all the competitors," said Puakea, whose official title is Senior Supervisor of Sports Equipment. "Out of the 20 I brought with me, 10 I made. They're light kayaks of the Von Heussen mold, about 170 pounds, and perfect for the younger kids. "It's exciting for me. I've been to the (U.S. team) trials but this will be the first time at the Olympics." About 10 years ago, Puakea had hoped to be competing internationally for the U.S. in kayaking. His failure at making the American team led to his getting involved in coaching, first with the Hawaii Canoe/Kayak Team and later with the U.S junior national team.

It's almost time for Olympic Fever. The kids will barely be back in school when from September 15 to October 1, 2000, most of us will be glued to our television sets, watching the games taking place in Sydney, Australia.
The 2000 Summer Olympic Competition events fall within the following categories:
  • Featured Competition: Modern Pentathlon
    Debut Sport: Trampoline
    Individual: Men Only
    Individual: Women Only
Team Events: Men Only Team Events: Women Only Team Events: Men and Women Equestrian Debut Sport: Triathlon Featured Competition: Rowing
  • Featured Competition: Modern Pentathlon This event isn't for slackers. It also helps if you're a morning person, too. Competition starts at 5:30 A.M. with a pistol shoot at a bull's-eye target 10 meters away. After that, there's the dueling and fencing for "first blood," where a single touch wins. Then it's on to the pool, where competitors swim a 200-meter sprint; stroke style is each competitor's choice. Without even taking time to dry off, competitors head to the equestrian arena where they each coax an unfamiliar horse around and over a course of fences. Then, after "resting" atop that horse for a bit, there's a final, two-mile cross-country run. The entire competition takes about 12 hours.

Kayak Single (K1) The boats to watch include Germany, United States and France. Oliver FIX of Germany won the title at the World Championships in the K1 in Nottingham, England with 125.72, and teammate Thomas Becker was fourth, only .42 points behind silver-medalist Scott SHIPLEY and .04 behind bronze-medalist Jiri PRSKAVEC. Lukas POLLERT (CZE) will try to repeat his 1992 Olympic performance, as will silver-medalist Gareth MARRIOTT (GBR). Frenchman Emmanuel BRUGVIN shouldn't be far behind. Canoe Single (C1) The C1 sports U.S. darling David HEARN. His closest rival in Nottingham was German Soeren KAUFMANN, followed by Michal MARTIKAN of Slovakia. HEARN came in a disappointing 11th in Barcelona, but his world championship results prove his hard training, and he'll have the home advantage. World champion HEARN and his American teammate Jon LUGBILL are the local favorites. LUGBILL had won 12 world championship titles and three world cup titles when he finished fourth in the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. The heavy favorite, he was prevented from winning multiple Olympic medals only because the absence of the sport from the Olympic Programme during his prime. He retired after the 1992 Games but returned after shaking off a nagging shoulder injury. His style is self-admittedly well suited to the Ocoee. But is he too far past his prime? Canoe Doubles (C2) Brothers Lecky and Fritz HALLER of the United States won the first race of the 1995 World Cup season, but a fluke boating accident hampered their performance for the other races.

    48. Dear Marathon Paddler,
Sincerely,. Robert W.(Bob) Spain. USACK Nonolympic sports Board Member.CALL FOR NOMINATIONS. To the USA canoe/kayak Marathon sports Division.
    http://www.geocities.com/txpaddler/dearmarathonpaddler.html
Dear marathon paddler, In early December 2002, a nominations ballot was mailed to all USA Canoe/Kayak Marathon Sports Division members in order to fill positions that are required by the Administrative and Operating Procedures of the Marathon Sports Division (MSD) of USACK. If you have received this ballot you are listed as a "marathon " paddler and are eligible to serve and vote in this election. If the term of your membership has ended or will soon end, please renew so that you will be eligible to participate in this election. You may recall that a similar ballot was sent out earlier in the year, but unfortunately, no one volunteered to serve and we are trying a second time. Please be aware that unless we fill the vacant positions, the MSD is in violation of our Administrative and Operating Procedures The mailout also included a complete list of 111 MSD members in order to aid voters in selecting representatives to run for the Geographic Regional and Athlete Representatives positions. Please be aware that to nominate a person to serve, you must confirm that they will be willing to serve. Also, each nominee must prepare a 50-word statement highlighting qualification and willingness and motivation to serve. During the past 2 years or so, the activities and operation of the Division has fallen on Lee Deviney and myself. This has included support from the program office, which has been a big help, however, we have not had the volunteer support that is needed. Our efforts have included the coordination of division activities, selecting a marathon team, assisting in the application process and making arrangements to send a team to the World Championship, etc. With all the commitments, we cannot continue to administer all these activities without more help.

Seattle canoe kayak Club Sprint had a dream of involving young people in a littleleague of water sports and ultimately placing paddlers on olympic teams
    http://www.scn.org/rec/sckc/misc_pages/aboutteam.html
About the Sport It is very fitting that canoe/kayak racing exists today in the northwest, as this is where the original canoes and kayaks were made. The northwest native American indians buillt the first canoes (non-dug-out type) while their Alaskan counterparts built kayaks. The first racing club was founded in England in 1866, and held its first regattta the following year. The boats were modeled on the northwest Native American and Inuit boats from what is now Alaska. In the US, the first club was the New York Canoe Club founded in 1871. Flatwater Sprint Paddling in canoe and kayak is an Olympic sport. In 1924, the sport debuted in the Olympic games in Paris as an exhibition put on by the Washington Canoe Club (founded in 1904 on the Potomac) and five teams from other countries. Canoe/Kayak became a medal event in the 1936 Games in Berlin. Canoe/Kayak racing has been part of the Olympics ever since with events in men's and women's kayak and men's canoe. About the Sprint Team Our program offers a lot of fun, hard work and pay-offs. Year-round membership on the team is a big commitment, but in return it offers physical and mental training, skills and confidence building, socialization, coaching, competition and the opportunity for both team and personal success.

What Is The United States Canoe Association? Quick Facts: offers a Basic Canoeing Instruction program to build paddling skills for the beginner and novice paddler taught by USCA certified Instructors What is Marathon Canoe Racing? It's long distance racing in canoes or kayaks with sit down style paddling, over distances that vary from 2 to 18 miles and sometimes to 200 + miles on lakes and rivers. The conditions may not exceed Class II (International Scale of River Difficulty.) The majority of races are from 5 to 20 + miles or not exceeding 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 hours in length and may include portages. How Is Marathon Racing Different From Olympic Sprint Racing? - Olympic Sprint racers high-kneel on one knee in Olympic sports and usually race on straight courses of 500 to 1000 meters in length, and paddle a different type of boat. Marathon racers generally sit down while paddling and follow long courses with varied water conditions. Both sports use specialized canoes and kayaks, however, marathons also have classes for recreational canoes. Are There Certain Rules Required In Racing?
