Unregistered parties may run candidates in elections, but any donations they receive are not tax deductible, their parties' names do not appear on the ballot along with their candidates', and they do not qualify for government payments equal to 22.5% of their election expenses. Elections Canada's Political Party Handbook and Election Handbook for Candidates (pdf) provide many more details about the rules that apply to political parties and individual candidates. The PC Party of Canada has a Candidates Manual that provides some insight into the process of getting nominated to run as a party candidate. For the 2000 general election, there are 11 political parties registered. The Christian Heritage Party had been registerted but failed to field the minimum 50 candidates necessary to retain its registered status. The parties' web sites can be very useful sources of information about their policies, leaders, and candidates.
