Introduction [Top of Page] Background: The former French Cameroon and part of British Cameroon merged in 1961 to form the present country. Cameroon has generally enjoyed stability, which has permitted the development of agriculture, roads, and railways, as well as a petroleum industry. Despite movement toward democratic reform, political power remains firmly in the hands of an ethnic oligarchy. Cameroon
Cameroon, sometimes known as the hinge of Africa, is located in the western part of Africa. Its 240 mile coastline on the Gulf of Guinea forms Cameroon's western boarder. Nigeria is to the northwest, Lake Chad to the north, Chad and Central African Republic to the east, Congo to the southeast, and Gabon and Rio Muni to the south.
Cameroon has an area of 475,440 sq km. Only 13% of that is considered arable land. If you would like to get a better understanding of its size, it is slightly larger than California. Cameroon's climate varies depending on where you are in the country. It is tropical to the south along the coast, and in the north it can be from semi arid to hot.
In some parts of Cameroon, they have a natural hazard. Volcanoes are active and when they erupt they release poisonous gases. Cameroon also has environmental issues too. Some are deforestation, overgrazing, and deserification.
