Berkeley California
is one of the most unique and exciting cities in the world. Because of its outstanding and diverse cultural history, unique geography, and steadily growing economy, Berkeley continues to attract intellectuals, artists, entrepreneurs, and world travelers, as it has for decades. Berkeley natives have lived among the many charms of this city by the bay since long before the University of California Free Speech Movement gave Berkeley its international notoriety in the 1960's.
Today, few places on earth celebrate their rich, culturally diverse population with Berkeley's wide variety of year-round cultural activities. Another aspect of Berkeley's diversity and appeal is its close physical proximity to the general San Francisco bay area and to the greater Northern California region. Berkeley is at the geographic center of the east bay area and is just a short, beautiful drive over either of our two world class bridges connecting us to San Francisco and Marin counties.

Chapter III Functions and Programs of Higher Education in California A. Functions and Programs of the Public Junior Colleges General Education in the Junior Colleges
General Education in the Junior Colleges
Under the auspices of the American Council on Education, workshops in general education were held for staff members of California junior colleges in the summer of 1950 and 1951. The results of these workshops, with illustrations of general education in California junior colleges, were reported in General Education in Action, published in 1953. In spite of the commendable progress reflected in this volume, the junior colleges have not given the national leadership in general education that they might have been expected to provide. One reason for this, apparently, is that as a means of assuring that the transfer student's background is equivalent to a student's who has completed his lower-division work at the University, the junior colleges tend to conform to the attitude and practice of the University of California, which seemingly maintains that the objectives of general education are satisfactorily met through conventional, departmental, introductory courses. Thus, even if the junior colleges were convinced that integrated courses designed especially for general education were desirable, they would still find it expedient to maintain a lower-division program directly comparable or largely comparable to that of the University of California.
