Comment on the text and the activities therein. Is it easy to read? Are the activities helpful and fun?
Responses
ID Response The book is really good. It's not so easy to read but we need more time for that. The activities are very helpful and fun. I don't know that anything in this class is fun. The text is easier to read than other math books I have had. The activities are helpful because they are usually the ones on the quizes and can be done ahead of time. The text is excellent. The quizzes could stand some work in terms of understandability - the questions are sometimes hard to decipher, not straightforward. I wouldn't call the activities fun, but they are enlightening, and worthwhile to do I think that this math class is really fun. This class is quite different than any other math class that I took in the past. I really enjoy being in this class. The text is easy to read and clearly states the concepts. The activities seem to be very helpful. I find them somewhat more "challenging" than "fun" as I struggle to grasp the concepts, but I do look forward to doing them every week. The book is better than other calculus books I've had, but it should have examples that are more relevant to the activities.

3.1 Fellowship programme
UNU/IIST Fellows are primarily selected by staff during visits to partner institutions, but also through off-shore training activities and participation in conferences and seminars. Potential candidates for Fellowships must satisfy a number of criteria:
  • they must have an MSc - with a PhD being desirable
  • they must be well-versed in the basics of software engineering and computer science
  • the must have a relatively good level of English
Basically, Fellows receive three types of training at UNU/IIST.
  • Research training - whereby Fellows are trained in doing research, in asking relevant scientific questions, and in the techniques for solving these. During their Fellowship period, they are expected to write scientific reports and are encouraged to submit them to journals and scientific conferences.
  • Development training - whereby Fellows are trained in advanced development of software - in methods, principles, techniques and tools. Fellows are also encouraged to produce technical reports for external publication.
  • Curriculum Development - whereby Fellows spend typically 3-6 months at UNU/IIST, during which time they develop, together with UNU/IIST staff, course curricula and course material for post-graduate and post-doctoral courses. At the end of their Fellowship, they take home course material and software for the support of the methods being taught (see description of this activity below).

Inspired by problems in astronomy, Isaac Newton and Wilhelm Gottfried Leibnitz developed the ideas of calculus roughly 300 years ago. Since then, calculus has provided the foundation for advances in many other fields, even those that seem far removed from mathematics. You will find applications in chemistry, physics, economics, biology, medicine, business, psychology, and, of course, mathematics. Calculus is so important that it is often considered the gateway to many of the disciplines in which it is used. The power of calculus lies in its power to reduce complicated problems to simple rules and procedures. While these procedures can be (and often are) taught with little regard to the underlying mathematical concepts or their practical uses, our emphasis will be on understanding all of these: concepts, procedures and uses.

My main interests include developing new courses or ways to teach courses, working on a variety of programs for the Mathematical Association of America , and of course, studying and exploring mathematics. Before joining the faculty at American, I worked for nearly a decade as an applied mathematician and software engineer in the aerospace industry in Southern California. Prior to that I taught mathematics in a variety of places, including the University of Wisconsin in Green Bay, Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, and Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. As suggested by my return from industry, the academic setting holds my greatest professional interest and attraction. However, my experiences in industry were broadening and valuable, and influenced both my mathematical interests and my approach to teaching. More information about my interests and some of the things I am working on can be found below.

Classroom Activities Amy Bruckman has used MOOs in her teaching since October of 1985. She is the founder of both MediaMOO, a MUD designed to be a professional community for media researchers, and MOOSE Crossing, a constructionist learning environment designed to get kids excited about reading, writing, and programming. For more information about her classroom activities, please see her homepage Michael Brundage has been using MOOs in his teaching of freshman-level multivariable calculus and geometry for about a year and a half. For the freshman calculus course, the MOO functioned as a fancy Web server, providing access to online copies of handouts given in class, answer keys (not usually available in class), test schedules, interactive worksheets (such as a partial differentiation drill), bulletin boards, and even a Mathematica graphing engine (which allowed students to enter a one, two, or three variable equation and then see its graph). Used in this capacity, the MOO was accessed over 1000 times each week. Jeff Cooper teaches English at Richmond High School. He has used MOOs to conference with students on-line and to introduce students to object oriented programming.
