SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES This is a listing of programs the Center currently offers during the summer. The programs listed have already taken place this year, but this is a sample of programs offered each year. GLOBE
East Carolina University, Greenville, NC June 10-14, 2002 For teams of two teachers from a school, grades K-12, a course applying GLOBE and GIS for both teacher-guided and student-designed inquiry projects. A one week summer institute will be offered with two follow up days at the NCSTA conference. 6.0 units of renewal credit (4.8 of those credits are for technology); stipends and substitute support provided. The workshop is open to any North Carolina teachers and will pay teachers a stipend of $60.00 a day. Teachers will receive training AND equipment to integrate rich, authentic activities that address the objectives of the required Earth/ Environment Science course objectives. GLOBE activities explore day-to-day changes in conditions of the earth and data will collected that is added to the worldwide database. Instructional strategies will focus on inquiry and integrating essential communication skills. Systemic change is goal for Long Island Mathematical Sciences and Their Applications Throughout the Curriculum project. Students from SUNY Farmingdale in a Long Island Consortium course.
  • Changing the modes of instruction and student learning to improve the educational experience of our students.
  • Changing the academic culture to create better connections between instruction in mathematics and instruction in mathematically based disciplines.
  • Overcoming some of the obstacles that prevent students from learning mathematics by drawing on real-world uses of mathematics in science and business to motivate the students and illustrate the value of mathematics.
In its three years, we have seen LICIL grow to involve collaborations with faculty in disciplines that use little mathematics, such as sociology, nursing, and the law. Our strategy is to create a process that will promote change rather than specific curricular and pedagogical outcomes; one of our goals is to produce an environment conducive to continuing instructional innovation.

Instructions on How to Do an Internet Presentation Without an Internet Connection
A workshop includes active attendee participation, an in-depth treatment of a skill, and significant handouts. Assignments are made on a space available basis, as conference payments are received. Attendees may register for two workshops. The workshops listed as Off-site will be held in a computer lab at City Colleges Center Campus of Phoenix College. All participants should schedule at least 30 minutes each way for travel. The conference program will have a more detailed bus schedule. AMATYC is not responsible for the transportation of anyone who misses the bus.

Philosophy
When I travel, I find that the lessons I learn as a traveler are at least as important as the sights I see. The personal growth I experienced during my semesters abroad in college will be valuable throughout my life. As a teacher of mathematics, my hope is that the lessons my students learn while doing mathematics are ones they will carry with them later in life - even if the content of course fades from memory. I imagine tour guides never tire of those moments when their charges first view some monument and express their amazement. For me the best parts of teaching are those moments when my students say, "Aha!" because some difficult problem or concept has just become clear because of something I said or did. Those are the moments that make teaching truly rewarding. Back to Top
Objectives
There are several teaching objectives applicable to every course I teach. My students should finish the course with a conceptual understanding of the course content. They should be able to apply the concepts they have learned in areas that are or will be relevant to them. These are the most important goals, and while their particulars will depend on the content of the course, the majority of my teaching effort is in pursuit of these goals. A related goal is that my students should have some degree of confidence in their ability to solve mathematical problems. Most mathematics students encounter at some point in their education what I call "the wall" - when a new mathematical concept or problem is much harder than previous ones. When facing the wall, a student can give up, which often results in a long-lasting aversion to mathematics, or press on and, with hard work and patience, overcome the wall. Once a student has surmounted his or her first significant mathematical obstacle, the self-confidence gained in doing so makes facing further challenges less daunting. Many students face the wall in their first collegiate mathematics course. One of my goals as a teacher is to help my students understand that such challenges will come and that hard work and patience are needed to meet those challenges.

Steve Olson/ Calculus The morning session of Calculus will deal with slope fields (which will be tested in 2004 for the first time); accumulation functions; and calculator programs that can help you teach AP calculus. An inside look will be given on the 10 hardest single points to earn on the AP exam. World History: Mapping Environmental World History Deborah Johnston/World History This session will focus on one of the six AP themesthe impact of techonology and demography on people and the environment. Topics include urbanization, El Nino, disease, population growth, and globalization. Participants will experience AP World History lessons from each unit of the course through an in-depth focus on this theme. The activities foucs on developing geography skills, as well as document analysis work and essay building techniques. Supplemental readings for use in the classroom will be provided.

How I Got Here
I feel a great debt to the teachers who inspired me throughout my education. When I began to teach, my objective was to emulate them. I concentrated on oratorial skills, organization, clarity, and a good rapport with students. However, I was always disappointed by the fact that it was easy to get students to memorize a lot of information but difficult to get them to understand and integrate it in any depth. Moreover, college students retain very little from their courses after just a few months. (For example, after a full year of calculus few students remember how to do simple inegrations, after a full year of organic chemistry, few students remember major reaction mechanisms.) Most veteran professors have had the experience of delivering a clear and cogent lecture only to find on the exam that students really didn't grasp the major points. Conversely, sometimes one feels that a lecture was inarticulate and rough, yet students seem to have learned the material quite well. I didn't understand this phenomenon until a cognitive psychologist provided me with an explanation for this riddle (described below).
