A governor's council is readying lawsuits against Union County Public Schools after parents of disabled students said a high school principal was unresponsive to their needs. The Governor's Advocacy Council for Persons with Disabilities sent a letter to the school district this month outlining its concerns with Weddington High School Principal Joe Delaney. Parents say he's dismissive of their concerns. The council, made up of 21 members appointed by the governor and other elected officials and staffed by attorneys and advocates, investigates issues of rights for people with disabilities. Pauline Laubinger, special counsel for the group, said she expects to file "four or five" lawsuits by the end of the month. Each will deal with a different disabled student's situation at Weddington High, she said. In the letter, Laubinger lists parents' concerns: "Mr. Delaney's dismissive attitude toward parents, use of profanity (for example, asking parents "what the hell" they want and telling him to "get the hell out" of the school) ... his statements that the Board of Education and superintendent are in his control and that he is free to do as he wishes, his instructions to staff that they need not comply with federal or state law requirements for students with disabilities, etc."
