Burundi - Culture Overview
The vast majority of the population is Hutu, with only 10% Tutsi (and 1% Twa). Yet these statistics do not reveal the large numbers of people who have intermarried, or the regional loyalties that overshadow ethnic categorization. For example, it is the Tutsi Hima of the south, not the Tutsi Banyaruguru of the north, who have controlled the army and police. The Roman Catholic Church claims the allegiance of most Christian Burundians, and is feared by those Tutsis in the government who believe that the Church's social and educational activities empower Hutus. There are also Protestants, animists, and a small number of Muslims. French and Kirundi, the standard tongue spoken throughout the country, are the official languages. Kiswahili is the language of trade and is widely spoken in the capital.
Most of the best-studied Burundian culture was tied to the royal court and centered on music and dance that extolled the virtues of kingship. These dances and the elaborate ceremonies surrounding the royal drums are performed without enthusiasm now. As in much of Africa, cultural heritage is preserved in the artisanal production of goods for daily use. The smelting and working of copper, for example, is an ancient art that continues to be practiced in traditional ways in such regions as Musigati, where special songs accompany different stages of the work. There is a rich oral literature in Kirundi including tales, proverbs, riddles, and poetry, some of which has been recorded and translated into French. The potential for written culture was limited in 1972 by the execution of all Hutus involved in higher education.

    Key Problems
    • Colonial-induced animosities and subsequent competition among ethnic elites have fueled a three-decade-long political conflict in Burundi, turning the country into a powder keg primed by fears for personal security. Since 1993 some 150,000 Burundian civilians have been murdered in spreading genocidal conflicts in Central Africa. The international community, which failed to act when the crisis began, now faces a major challenge in Burundi and, more widely, in Central Africa.
This undercut the political legitimacy of those Hutu moderates committed to peaceful change. Former FRODEBU Minister Leonard Nyangoma responded by organizing the CNDD, a Hutu-led political movement- cum

UNESCO Prizes U NESCO P EER Regional Programme of Education for Emergencies, Communication and Culture of Peace The Following information is reprinted from the UNESCO PEER Newsletter: January - June 1999 C ulture of P eace N etwork UNESCO PEER has launched an initiative for the constitution of a Regional Culture of Peace Network (CPN) in the Great Lakes Region and the Horn of Africa. The underlying principle is that modalities and mechanisms of implementation of a culture of peace or conflict resolution are to be reinforced at three levels: decision-makers, intellectuals, grassroots organizations and communities. CPN's purpose is threefold:
  • To develop a common understanding and vision for the culture of peace networks in the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes Region. To promote mutually empowering relationships and strategies for action. To provide an information databank, act as an information clearing house for the network and to develop a directory and website.
  • The first CPN meeting took place in Nairobi on 12 April 1999 and comprised 20 local NGOs involved in various activities in Kenya ranging from conflict resolution to peace education, the promotion of inter-religious dialogue and gender issues.
