What is Bulimia?
Bulimia was only diagnosed as its own eating disorder in the 1980s People with bulimia can look perfectly normal. Most of them are of normal weight, and some may be overweight. Women with bulimia tend to be high achievers. It is often difficult to determine whether a person is suffering from Bulimia. This occurs because binging and purging is often done in secret. Also, individuals suffering from Bulimia often deny their condition. Sufferers consume huge quantities of food. Sometimes up to 20,000 calories at a time. The foods on which they binge tend to be foods labeled as "comfort foods" sweet foods, high in calories, or smooth, soft foods like ice cream, cake, and pastry. An individual may binge anywhere from twice a day to several times daily. A Family Member has an Eating Disorder If you have a family member that with an Eating Disorder, they need a lot of support. Suggest that your family member see an eating disorder expert. Be prepared for denial, resistance, and even anger. A doctor and/or a counselor can help them battle their eating disorder.

THIS BOOKLET HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO MAKE YOU THINK TWICE ABOUT HOW YOU VIEW PEOPLE WHO SUFFER FROM ANOREXIA AND BULIMIA
They say size isn't important. But when does a girl become a woman? Is it when she is seventeen? Or when she has her first kiss? No, it is when she no longer looks like a girl. But that isn't all of it. It can be a problem discovering what sort of woman-sized woman to be. It is not just about being fat or thin. It is about being gay or straight, or a mother or a daughter, working, playing, anything that makes life what it is. It is about control of your impulses and destiny. Sometimes it seems impossible to control all this. Or if you do everything might go wrong. You might not fit anymore and everything will fall apart.

Now it is over two years later, and I would like to consider myself in "remission" so to speak. Bulimia What Is Bulimia? Bulimia is an eating disorder characterized by binge eating and purging. Binge eating is the uncontrolled consumption of large amounts of food in a relatively short period of time. Common methods of purging are self-induced vomiting, use of laxatives, over-exercising, fasting, or severe diets. The binge-purge cycle can range from a relatively infrequent response to stress to a debilitating pattern that absorbs most of the person's time, energy and money. Who Develops Bulimia? Anyone, regardless of gender race or socio-economic status can develop bulimia. An individual is typically of normal or near normal weight, although they may have a distorted image of their bodies. They tend to be perfectionists, high achievers, and overly concerned about what others think of them. What Causes Bulimia? Experts continue to search for the causes of bulimia. Most now agree that biological, psychological, and social factors all play part. Research has suggested that bulimia is an attempt to relieve emotional stress for those who lack alternative coping skills. Social factors within our culture also contribute to eating disorders. People are bombarded with the emphasis placed on slim, "perfect" bodies and they come to believe that their bodies don't meet these unrealistic standards. How Can Bulimia Hurt?

    Bulimia
I do not have a question but rather a personal story to share. I myself have dealt with bulimia for several years. I want to let your readers know they are not alone! For me, my eating disorder began when I was approximately 15 years old. I am now 23. I want to let those who are struggling with an eating disorder know that it is possible to over come bulimia and/or anorexia. I myself have not entirely beaten this disease but I'm more than half way there. There is an end to all the craziness, trust me, but it takes a lot of time, work, effort and the will to get better. You have to take each day at a time and you have to keep focused. I had to quit university, the year I was to graduate and believe me it was the toughest decision for me to make. I chose to delay my graduation in order to join group therapy in my hometown. I think back to this day how grateful I am that I made that decision and how grateful I am to have had such supportive friends and family members. When it comes down to it people are very caring and understanding when you come to them for help. I would like to offer my help in any way possible in order to help others beat their eating disorders. I found that one of the best solutions is talking. Many bulimics out there feel like there is nowhere to turn or maybe they feel like they will be looked down. I'm still glad to see that there is somewhere to find help. Having an eating disorders are not a very easy thing to admit and I'm very glad to see that there are individuals strong enough to come forth with their problem. I know in my case that if it was not for my five roommates God knows where I would be now.

Introducing Bulimia Nervosa Dr Peter Rowan MBBS.MRCPsych.
    General Description
Signs that may indicate that there is a problem include a tendency to leave the table immediately after a meal. Vomiting is most frequently induced by forcing two fingers of the right hand down the throat. This often causes a chronic blister just below the knuckle where it rubs on the upper teeth. Repeated vomiting quite often leads to swelling of the salivary glands that show as soft swellings at the base of the ears or just under the chin. If it goes on for many years the swellings become hard and permanent. Three Types of Bulimia
Bulimia Nervosa is best considered as three separate illnesses that share the essential features described above. They will be discussed below under three different headings; Simple, Anorexic, and Multi-impulsive Bulimia Nervosa. There is quite a lot of overlap between them so that there are a number of sufferers who show characteristics that belong midway between these subgroups. Simple Bulimia Nervosa Anorexic Bulimia Nervosa Multi-impulsive Bulimia Nervosa Causes of Bulimia Nervosa
Once the illness has become established the trigger to binge is often partly or wholly related to feelings. Periods of depression, boredom, and anger are likely to increase the risk especially when the sufferer is alone. It is a habit forming behaviour and some girls plan being alone and having food available in order to make bulimia easier. They can become addicted to the emotional feelings that are generated in this way.

Una gran part del jovent lluita per aconseguir el "fisic ideal" motivats per artistes, models o per la publicitat comercial. Molta gent creu que el món és dels prims.
