The effects of the Baby Boom are acutely felt in many city school districts. Vancouver Superintendent of Schools, H. N. MacCorkindale, comments on the unprecedented number of births and the "very urgent need for the expansion of our school facilities" and urges the Department of Education to make "every effort to provide the necessary staff, buildings, and equipment to care for the proper growth and development of these children" i.e. the first wave of "baby boomers."
Notre Dame University College opens in Nelson, B. C. with an enrolment of twelve students. The college was established by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Nelson. In 1951 Notre Dame became affiliated as a junior college with Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, and in 1961 it became affiliated with St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. In 1963 it was constituted as a private university by a special charter of the provincial legislature.
The first chills of the Cold War are evident in the provincial education system. In September 1951, a course of lectures on Civil Defence Affairs is organized at the Provincial Normal School in Victoria. The next year, the Department of Education issues a poster on what to do "If An Air Raid Comes Without Warning." "Get Under Your Desk - Move Fast!."

    Background
The B.C. History of Nursing Group has members throughout Canada and the world. Nurses and others interested in history of nursing can network through the group. Many members are involved in their own individual history of nursing projects but appreciate the networking opportunities. Members who reside in the greater Vancouver area meet regularly. Executive meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month; usually at the RNABC offices; any member is welcome to attend. General meetings featuring speakers or field trips are held at various venues in and outside Vancouver. An annual meeting is held in April in conjunction with the RNABC annual meeting Members prepare nominations annually for the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) and RNABC Memorial Books.

    Introduction
You will find information about British Columbia on every level of the library. The largest collections of B.C. history are in the History and Government Division (level 6) and in Special Collections (level 7). Either of these may be a good place to start your search, but the search may lead to other divisions as well, particularly for the history of topics relating to those divisions.
This guide will direct you to some of the places and search tools which may have materials on the topic you want to research. Contents

    http://www.atlinheliski.com/english/history.html
During the peak of the Gold Rush approximately 10,000 adventurers lived in Atlin and another 6,000 in the surrounding area. This is hard to imagine looking at this small sleepy town with its 300 inhabitants. Walking through the village streets, however, one can get a glimpse of the past and experience the Gold Rush atmosphere. ATLIN'S HISTORY Atlin, British Columbia is located in solitary stubbornness a few miles south of the Yukon border. Atlin is near Atlin Lake, British Columbia's largest natural lake, a lake of haunting beauty. A small infusion of new log buildings stand on orderly streets among aged clapboard houses and historic public places as proof of the town's continued regeneration. A major gold rush gave birth to Atlin, but a reason for its present healthy state is not particularly obvious. Many British Columbians have never heard of Atlin, but this was not always the case. Atlin`s nearest provincial neighbor is Telegraph Creek, far away on the Stikine River. They are connected by an overgrown trail 375 km long. This old route, the Telegraph Trail, was once busy with travelers, hunters and the men who operated and maintained the Dominion Telegraph line. Now it is part of the past as are the other abandoned trails, blazed by stampeders, then used for years by Atlinites, visitors and suppliers on their way in and out of the community. Atlin had passed its half century mark before a road was built linking it with the Alaska Highway. Since 1949 it has been more closely allied with Whitehorse, Yukon than with any place in British Columbia.

Historical Chinese Language Materials in British Columbia: An Electronic Inventory
A catalogue with some digitized samples of Chinese language historical records preserved in British Columbia. From the About page (2003-03-07): "In response to the growing interest of researchers and the community in general, Asian Library, Centre for Chinese Research, UBC and David Lam Centre, SFU began to develop a database in the spring of 2000, which now includes over 11,000 entries contributed by 12 resource centres and 6 pioneer families across the province. Our aim is to develop a comprehensive inventory, searchable on the Web by keywords in Chinese, English and Pinyin. We also offer advice on options for preservation so that information is not lost with the memory of those involved or decay of materials."
