After winning the Saskatchewan title the team of Bunny Hinch, Sarah Nykiforuk, Marion Taylor, Gerry Thompson, Shirley Quayle and Martha Caudle (spare) went to Winnipeg to take part in the Western Canadian championships. After winning the West the team coached by Bob Price and managed by Mickey Poplack stayed in Winnipeg and took on the Eastern champions from Toronto in a 10-game series. Saskatoon's pinfall after 5 games was 6112. In the second 5-game set they scored 6896 including a 1512 in the 3rd match. Hinch rolled her first ever 400 (a 401) in the last game. Saskatoon had defeated Toronto by 566 pins thus avenging the loss to Toronto the year before. In the 10-game series Hinch averaged 278.3, Nykiforuk 263.7, Taylor 255.4, Thompson 253.7 and Quayle 247.4. The total pinfall of 13,008 is a record that still stands today. Senior correspondent A Holland area women's bowling team by the name of Split-Me-Not hit the jackpot at the 1997 Michigan Women's State Tournament. "We won state (in the team handicap division)," said Sharon Ooms on Tuesday. "It's pretty exciting." As far as anyone can tell, the Holland team, which consists of Ooms, Judy Dagen, Deb Stempfly, Cindy Semishko and Rose Zych, made history when they bowled this past March at the Royal Scot Lanes in Lansing. "That's at least what (Holland Women's Bowling Association publicity director) Merry DeBoer mentioned to us," said Ooms. "Merry's records go back 20 years, and as far as she knows, we're the first Holland women's state championship team." DeBoer, who writes weekly bowling columns for the Sentinel during the fall and winter, echoed Ooms' comments. "We've had some other bowlers win individual honors, but to the best of our knowledge, and as far as we can determine, no team previously has won state," DeBoer said. Split-Me-Not, which bowls out of Century Lanes, was hotter than a firecracker at state.

2001-02 Press-Gazette all-metro bowling team: Parrott, Thyes take top honors
Wood, Martin voted best juniors By Jim Zima
Press-Gazette correspondent
Scott Weber, Mike LaFave, Alex Young, Terry Clark and Tom Sawyer joined Thyes on the first team. Clark and Sawyer tied for the final spot. Mike and Wendy LaFave are brother and sister. Young was bowler of the year last year when LaFave and Sawyer also were first-team choices. Weber was on the second team last year after being bowler of the year four of the previous five years, and Clark moved up from honorable mention a year ago. The only change in her game this year was a different ball. Laura Fruzen led the city in number of 600-plus series and had a GBWBA season-high series of 805. Thyes won the prestigious average title in the Green Bay Major, where he led his Marty Brice Construction team to the championship. He was second in the Green Bay Bowling Association in national honor counts with 41, including an 817. He rolled four 300 games. Thyes said winning the average title and the championship in the Major were the highlights of his season.

The Baker County High School bowling team traveled, for it’s third consecutive week, out to Columbia County to compete with the Tigers. The girls faced off against some stiff competition and struggled to match up with the Tigers throughout the night. The final score/averages for the match were the Baker County Wildcats with 89 and Columbia County Tigers with a hefty 121. The week featured some new names on the top list of bowlers showing some promising individual improvement. Tina Orton who bowled an impressive 111 bowled the highest score of the night for the cats. Lacey West bowled a nice score of 92 and was followed by Chariot Moore with an 87. Shannon Smallwood also displayed her fine bowling abilities by rolling up with an 85. Rita Larry, Hillary Phillips, and Brynne Payne all bowled well and finished with the same score of 84. Tami Richardson rounded out the top bowlers with her score of 82. The Wildcat bowlers are looking ahead to match this week against the squad from Ft. White. The match will be held in Lake City due to the lack of an alley in Ft. White or here in Macclenny. The girls’ record now stands at 0-3 and will be bowling hard in hopes for their first win.

Carle Place Boys' Bowling Team Wins Championships
Nassau County Champions...The Carle Place Boys Varsity Bowling Team is shown with the Mineola Girls Varsity Bowling Team. The Carle Place High School's boys' bowling team recently won their second consecutive Nassau County Championship title by holding off East Meadow and Hewlett for the victory. The Frogs earned a 98 pin victory (6,314 to 6,216) over second place East Meadow. There was a huge crowd of Carle Place supporters at the Garden City Bowl to cheer on their team to victory. The Frogs never lost their focus, and each of the top five bowlers scored well over 200 in the final game to secure the win. Coach Ralph Capozzi and his group of superb bowlers never lost their confidence while helping the Frogs to their second County Championship. Vin Capozzi, a senior bowler on the Carle Place boys' team, managed to overcome a separated shoulder earlier in the season. Vin, who is Ralph's son, even made a bold prediction on Thursday night's edition of the "Halftime Howie" radio program (WGBB), whereby he "guaranteed" victory at the Nassau County Championships. Coach Capozzi, who felt that the prediction was somewhat bold, nevertheless encouraged his team to defend their title. History will show that "his boys" came through once again," noted a spokesperson. Individually, three of Carle Place's bowlers finished in the top ten for a six-game series, Chris Bilbao (1315), Kyle Lavery (1290), and Vin Capozzi (1288). In addition, Chris Bilbao had a high game of 267 and Kyle Lavery 247. There were also major contributions from L.J. Lopez (226 high game), Jimmy Amodeo (240 high game), and Sean Marshall (233 high game) during the County Championships. Vin Capozzi had four games over 225.

For anyone who says sports dynasties are dead say hello to the Air Force bowling team. The 2003 edition dominated the 25th annual Armed Forces Bowling Championship March 14-20 at the Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, Skylark Bowling Center. It marked the first time the tournament was held here. Airmen swept all the gold medals on their way to claiming their fifth consecutive inter-service team title and 15th overall since 1976. Their 53,971 total pinfall bested the Army (49,873), Navy (48,495) and Marine Corps (36,536). (The Marines sent only nine bowlers to the event sporting 12-person teams.) "The other services have good bowlers," Air Force coach and tournament director Chuck Hall said. "But, from top to bottom we're the strongest team."
