RESEARCH and ACTIVITIES January 1, 2001 - December 31, 2001 Undergraduate Students Vicente Garcia finished his honors thesis research in the Olmstead lab during the spring quarter. His topic was the molecular phylogeny and systematics of the Australian endemic tribe of Solanaceae, the Anthocercideae, which consists of 7 genera and approximately 31 species and is closely related to the tobacco genus, Nicotiana . This research was made possible by collaboration with David Symon at the Adelaide Botanical Garden, who provided virtually all of the plant material. Vicente began his Ph.D. studies at the University of California at Berkeley in the fall of 2001. Graduate Students Paul Beardsley is working on the molecular systematics of the genus Mimulus , determining species-level relationships and redefining the familial placement of this genus and its putative relatives. DNA sequence analysis is showing that Mimulus and other members of the tribe Mimuleae are best placed in a redefined family Phrymaceae rather than the Scrophulariaceae. In addition, Paul is working to estimate the phylogeny of Mimulus section Erythranthe and determine the polarity of pollinator shifts. Paulís work also entails the use of molecular data to help determine taxonomic units in groups of plants that have few morphological characters, and he is examining species-level relationships in a newly recognized radiation of

Some of these experiments may be the extraction of aspirin from red willow, several levels of keying activities, plant and flower dissection, identification of California medicinal and edible plants, the life of a tree, bark beetle study, mechanisms of seed dispersal, and transpiration. Birds of Prey Students will learn about raptors and their adaptations. Owls, hawks, eagles, and vultures will be studied. We will discuss their relationship with the environment, man, and each other. Botanical Garden classes at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill offer classes in these and other activities. Artist and illustrator Ruth Brunstetter will teach two sessions of "Black and White Botanical Illustration" in January and February. YOUNG Don't waste time teaching online or laboring over electronic course enhancements unless you've already climbed to the top of the tenure-and-promotion ladder. Review committees may not take technology work seriously, so stick to traditional academic activities, like publishing journal articles. That's the warning Gary Bradshaw heard from colleagues when he told them about his work on ePsych, an online resource to help introductory psychology students. He already had tenure when he started the online project, but he found out the hard way that the advice was sound. He was twice turned down for a promotion to full professor at Mississippi State University, where he is an associate professor of psychology. (The chairman of the psychology department, Stephen B. Klein, said he could not discuss personnel issues.) Summer is the time to head outdoors, but that doesn't mean learning has to stop. This week, Education World looks at two new books that can provide kids with hours of fun while they learn all about the natural world. NATURE LESSONS If you are looking for a variety of engaging, educational activities that help teach kids about the world around us, you should examine Nature for Fun Projects, by Sally Hewitt. (Copper Beech Books/Millbrook Press) The book is divided into six chapters filled with dozens of projects. Each chapter could be used as a classroom unit, and many of the experiments can stand alone as well. Rivers, Ponds, and Seashore includes projects that teach about flowing water, aquatic plant and animal life, and water birds. Life Cycles covers such topics as growing plants from seed, nutrition, birds' nests, and the life cycle of a butterfly. Most of the activities use commonplace, inexpensive materials. For example, the lesson on animal camouflage in Woods and Meadows uses only cardboard, paint, and scissors.
