Picture: Domestic Bactrian Camel (28 Kb JPEG) San Diego Zoo The wild Bactrian (two-humped) camel is adapted to arid plains and hills where water sources are few and vegetation is sparse. Shrubs constitute its main source of food. Herds of these wild camels move widely, their distribution being linked to water. The animals tend to concentrate in and around mountains, because most springs are there and snow on the slopes may provide the only moisture in winter. Concentrations of up to 100 camels occur near the mountains, but most herds contain 2 - 15 members. The small average herd size in the past 100 years reflects not just the aridity of the environment but also heavy hunting pressure. The range of the wild Bactrian camel in historic times extended from the great bend of the Yellow River at 110 deg E westward across the deserts of southern Mongolia and northwestern China to central Kazakhstan . It was already heavily hunted for its meat and hide in the 1800's, and by the 1850's it persisted only in remote areas of the Gobi and Taklimakan Deserts in

Summary
Introduction
Review of The Biodiversity Conservation Status Of Nepal Recommendations ... Assessment Of Investment Opportunities
Summary T he report "Opportunities for Biodiversity Investment in Nepal" is part of BPP's deliveries and represents a profile of future biodiversity conservation activities and brief notes on various organizations involved in nature conservation and development in Nepal. Different organizations selected for the assessment represented both public and private institutions. A questionnaire on short and medium term investment opportunities were filled out by the institutions. Altogether 97 proposals were received from 30 organizations. The applications received are wide ranging in terms of nature and include: Strengthening of Institutions, Establishment of Protected Areas, Conservation Awareness and Training Programmes, Biodiversity Research, and Community Development Programmes. The total budget proposed for these projects is about US $38 million covering a time span of five years. Physiographically, the 97 projects are scheduled to cover either the entire country or parts of it. Twenty-four proposed projects cover the Terai only; seven are confined to the Midhills, 14 to the Highlands, 17 to the Kathmandu Valley, four for the Terai and the Midhills, and five to the Terai and the Highlands.

Nepal is an incredibly diverse country. It has the greatest range in altitudes: ranging from the earth's highest mountains to subtropical river plains. There are about eight bioclimatic zones which harbors one of the world's richest biodiversity. Ten percent of the world's birds and 300 mammalian species dwell in Nepal. Eight national parks and five wildlife reserves are dedicated to wildlife preservation in Nepal. However, habitat loss and a host of other factors are threatening this Shangri La. This Key Development Sector explores the state of Nepal's environment and the conservation efforts underway. Please note that issues on forestry, water, land, and air are covered separately under Key Development Sectors of the same name. Sections marked with a symbol have been updated with new documents.

E cological topics are listed under three headings: 1) Ecology, 2) Conservation Biology, and 3) Botany and Systematics. Links to home pages of botanical and ecological societies are provided in the Journals and Societies List. The Ecological Software List offers links to sites describing software applications for analyzing or organizing ecological data. The Natural Resource Agencies List provides links to home pages of government agencies that conduct ecological research or that are responsible for the management of various ecosystems. The Natural Areas and Reserves heading lists links to sites that feature information about natural areas, LTER sites, national parks, and wilderness areas. The Environment List refers to sites dealing with ecosytem conditions and the Environmental Societies List is a catalog of links to home pages of environmental organizations. R esources included here will be of interest to botanists, plant ecologists, conservation biologists, resource managers, and to students at the university or high school levels. In addition, many of these web sites may be useful to those wishing to learn more about local or global environments. In a time when humans are increasingly influencing and integrated with the ecosystems in which we live, it is important for all of us to be literate in basic ecological concepts and aware of environmental issues.
