Transformation of Grief through Meaning-management* Paul T. P. Wong, PhD. C.Psych.
Trinity Western University
Langley, BC, Canada View printable version The paper examines the nature of bereavement grief and recognizes the complex pattern of emotional, cognitive, existential and spiritual coping reactions to the disruption of personal meaning systems. It proposes a process approach towards grief work, which encompasses several interrelated processes, such as mourning the loss, adjusting to the loss, accepting the loss and transforming the loss. It also recognizes different levels of acceptance and the paradoxical nature of transformation. Finally, it describes how grief can be transformed through meaning management. Introduction Grief is an inevitable, universal experience, more commonly experienced than death. So much of life is about loss. Going through life is to endure a series of losses, which include the loss of health, roles, identity, homeland, and loved ones through betrayal or death. Grief is the normal emotional response to loss. This paper focuses on bereavement grief.

THEIR JOURNEY HAS JUST BEGUN
Don't think of them as gone away,
their journey has just begun.
Life holds so many facets,
this earth is only one.
Just think of them as resting
from the sorrows and the tears,
in a place of warmth and comfort,
where there are no days and years.
Think of how they must be wishing
that we could know today,
how nothing but our sadness can really pass away. And think of them as living in the hearts of those they touched for nothing loved is ever lost and they were loved so much.

After the Darkest Hour
After the Darkest Hour
by Kathleen A. Brehony Guide Rating - This book was a God-send to me. Kathleen sent me a copy and it arrived the week my husband unexpectantly passed away. This book became a solace to me to help me understand I was not alone in my grief. It taught me that as hard as it is to journey through grief, we can learn something from our sorrow. Inspirational and comforting I recommend this book to anyone trying to make sense of loss. It is full of ideas to help us cope with our grief and to start to heal. Kathleen definitely has an insight into what the bereaved need to hear about their loss and she gives us permission to feel sorry for ourselves. The rituals she helps us create help us through our loss. This book is somewhat deep for those who are fresh in their loss but it is worth the reading.

Coping With Loss - Bereavement and Grief
In our hearts, we all know that death is a part of life. In fact, death gives meaning to our existence because it reminds us how precious life is. Coping With Loss The loss of a loved one is life’s most stressful event and can cause a major emotional crisis. After the death of someone you love, you experience bereavement , which literally means “to be deprived by death.” Knowing What to Expect When a death takes place, you may experience a wide range of emotions, even when the death is expected. Many people report feeling an initial stage of numbness after first learning of a death, but there is no real order to the grieving process. Some emotions you may experience include:
  • Denial             Disbelief        Confusion   Shock             Sadness Yearning        Anger             Humiliation   Despair          Guilt
These feelings are normal and common reactions to loss. You may not be prepared for the intensity and duration of your emotions or how swiftly your moods may change. You may even begin to doubt the stability of your mental health. But be assured that these feelings are healthy and appropriate and will help you come to terms with your loss. Remember It takes time to fully absorb the impact of a major loss. You never stop missing your loved one, but the pain eases after time and allows you to go on with your life. THE BEST PLACE TO BURY A DOG
There is one best place to bury a dog. If you bury him in this spot, he will come to you when you call - come to you over the grim, dim frontier of death, and down the well-remembered path, and to your side again. And though you call a dozen living dogs to heel, they shall not growl at him, nor resent his coming, for he belongs there. People may scoff at you, who see no lightest blade of grass bent by his footfall, who hear no whimper, people who may never really have had a dog. Smile at them, for you shall know something that is hidden from them, and which is well worth the knowing. The one best place to bury a good dog is in the heart of his master.

    A Broken Heart Still Beats

    After Your Child Dies

by Anne McCracken and Mary Semel
How Two Grieving Mothers Found Inspiration and Comfort
There are few, if any, events in life as traumatic, heart-wrenching, and crushing as the death of a child. While nothing can mute the pain of such a life-shattering loss, others who know this experience can help those suffering articulate the chaos of their feelings and see that they can, eventually, feel whole again. A Student Dies, A School Mourns. Dealing with Death and Loss in the School Community by Ralph L. Klicker, Ph.D. The book not only examines and explains the grief reactions of students and school staff members and the factors that affect these reactions, it also provides a systematic guide for developing a death-related crisis response plan.
