KOALA BEARS
Koala bears are such interesting animals. They are so cute and cuddly like toy teddy bears with their big eyes and fuzzy ears. You might feel like hugging them but be careful for some are cranky. Fully grown koalas are about two feet long, covered with thick, soft gray-brown fur and have round faces, saucer-sized ears and long black rubbery-looking noses.
Koalas are found naturally only in forests of Australia. They like to sleep in trees where they can find their favorite tasty eucalyptus leaves. They have to be careful that they don't eat leaves with too much acid because it will poison them.
The female matures when she is four years old. When her babies are born, they look like worms, naked, blind and pink. They crawl into their mother's pouch to nurse and stay there for six months. You don't even know they are there until they stick out their furry little heads. They crawl onto their mother's back, but if they are frightened they cry like babies and crawl back into the pouch. Gradually the young females will move to other trees, but the males might hang around too long, then their father has to give them a sharp cuff to make them move out.
Like all animals, koalas have enemies, too. Their worst enemies are domestic dogs, forest fires and man. Men like to kill them for their beautiful furs which they will then sell.

http://www.koalabears.com/koala bears.htm
Koala Bears Scientific classification: Scientific classification: The koala makes up the family Phascolarctidae. It is classified as Phascolarctos cinereus. Koala , common name for arboreal marsupial animal that in appearance somewhat resembles the toy teddy bear, and in habits somewhat resembles a sloth. The koala reaches a length of 60 to 85 cm (24 to 33 in) and has a maximum life span of 13 to 18 years. It has a large, round head with large, round, furry ears and a stout body covered with thick ashy-gray fur. The animal has a vestigial tail. Its legs are short; its feet are large, and each has five toes, two of which are opposable to the other three. Each toe bears a strong claw. The female bears one young at a time. The young koala is then kept in the marsupial pouch for about six months, after which time the female carries it upon her back until it is half grown. Koalas are found only in eucalyptus forests of eastern Australia. The animals frequent high eucalyptus trees, feeding on the leaves and flowers of certain species of eucalyptus, as well as on mistletoe and box leaves. The animal is lethargic and often remains in the same tree for days. The males are more active than the females and feed during the day; the females sleep all day and feed at night. Koalas sleep curled up on the limbs of trees, firmly grasping the limbs with their feet. The animal does not relax its hold even when it is mortally wounded by gunfire. Koalas were formerly killed for their soft, thick fur. They are now protected by law in Australia. They are so sedentary that they will not run off, even when kept in unfenced eucalyptus regions, as they are in several Australian parks.

SAVE THE KOALA!
Now there are only 2,000 to 8,000 koalas in the wild!
Although not officially classified as endangered, the population of the beloved koala has dropped by 90% in less than a decade! This is due to the destruction of their natural habitat, a narrow crescent on the eastern coast of Australia. Logging, agriculture and urban development have not only reduced the area available to them, but added other dangers. Their habitat has been criss-crossed by roads, resulting in many road kills, and attacks by neighboring pet dogs now are frequent. Disease, too, has taken its toll.
