While the grizzly normally avoids humans, it is the most unpredictable and dangerousof all bears. Copyright © 2001 www.grizzlybears.org All Rights Reserved.
    http://www.grizzly-bears.org/
Photo credited to Douglas Jager Common Name: Brown Bear, Alaskan Brown Bear, Kodiak Bear Scientific Name: Ursus Arctos Physical Description: Yellowish brown to dark brown, often with white-tipped hairs, giving grizzled appearance. Hump above shoulders, tail almost hidden in fur. Weight 324-1,499 pounds (147-680 kg); some individuals to 1,700 pounds (700 kg), head and body length, 6-7 feet; shoulder height, 3-31/2 feet. Somewhat open country, usually in mountainous areas, tundra; also along coasts and rivers. Alaska, Yukon, and Northwest Territories south through most of British Columbia and w Alberta to sc Nevada. Behavior: Lacking natural enemies, this giant does not always conceal itself when disturbed but rears up on its hind legs to get a better view of the situation. Primarily nocturnal, the great, shaggy Grizzly moves with a low, clumsy walk, swinging its head back and forth, but when necessary it can lope as fast as a horse. Grizzly cubs can climb, though not as nimbly as Black Bear cubs, but they lose their climbing ability during their first year. They den up in a protected spot such as a cave, crevice, dead tree, or a hollow dug out under a rock, and will return year after year to a good den. Not true hibernators, they can easily be awakened. While the Grizzly normally avoids humans, it is the most unpredictable and dangerous of all bears. The life span, in the wild, is 15 to 34 years. The Grizzly Bear is considered a threatened species in the lower 48 states.

    Brown Bear
Brown bears Ursus arctos ) occur throughout Alaska except on the islands south of Frederick Sound in southeastern Alaska, the islands west of Unimak in the Aleutian Chain, and the islands of the Bering Sea. They also occur in Canada, Asia, Europe, and in limited numbers in a few western states. Brown bears are very much a part of the Alaska scene and are a favorite topic with most hunters, hikers, photographers, and fishers. General description: Formerly, taxonomists listed brown and grizzly bears as separate species. Technically, brown and grizzly bears are classified as the same species, Ursus arctos . Brown bears on Kodiak Island are classified as a distinct subspecies from those on the mainland because they are genetically and physically isolated. The shape of their skulls also differs slightly. Ursus arctos The brown bear resembles its close relative the black bear, Ursus americanus . The brown bear, however, is usually larger, has a more prominent shoulder hump, less prominent ears, and longer, straighter claws. Both the prominent hump and the long claws of the brown bear are adaptations that are related to feeding behavior. The long claws are useful in digging for roots or excavating burrows of small mammals. The musculature and bone structure of the hump are adaptations for digging and for attaining bursts of speed necessary for capture of moose or caribou for food. Color is not a reliable key in differentiating these bears because both species have many color phases. Black bears, for example, occur in many hues of brown, and even shades of blue and white. Brown bear colors range from dark brown through light blond.

(Ursus arctos) Launched January 21, 1996 Last update March 27, 1996
    Brown Bear or Grizzly?
Both brown and grizzly bears are the same bear, Ursus arctos. There has been a tendency in North America to call the brown bear which lives in the interior, a grizzly, to distinguish it from the brown bears which live in coastal areas. The name "grizzly" comes from the silver tipped grizzled hairs that these brown bears develop as they get older.
The important thing is that whether someone calls it a brown bear or a grizzly bear, it is the same bear. It also does not matter whether it lives, in Asia, Europe or North America. We are always talking about the same bear!
Population and Distribution The brown bear has the most widespread distribution throughout the world of any of the eight bear species. They are found throughout most of the northern hemisphere including North America and Eurasia.
Their preferred habitat includes mountain forests, open meadows and large river valleys. Their range originally went from the northern arctic seacoasts, southward over the tundra-covered mountains of the north, throughout the boreal forests and as far south as Mexico on the North American continent and as far south as Spain, Italy and Iran in Eurasia. The southern limits of their range coincided with the end of travel corridors of preferred mountain forest habitat. There is also a population of brown bears on the Japanese island of Hokkaido.
It is estimated that there are currently somewhere between 125,000 and 150,000 brown bears throughout the world. In all but the most isolated and undeveloped habitat areas, brown bears have been eliminated from much of their possible range.

    77. Grizzly Bear
The physical and behavioral differences between black bears and grizzlybears have been described in detail by Herrero (1978). Black
    http://www.yellowstone-reservations.com/grizzly.htm
Yellowstone National Park Grizzly Bear (Ursus arctos horribilis) The grizzly bear population within the Yellowstone ecosystem is estimated to be approximately 280-610 (Eberhardt and Knight 1996) bears. The park does not have a current estimate of the black bear population; black bears are considered to be common in the park. Grizzly Bear (Ursus arctos horribilis) Color: Varies from black to blonde; frequently with white-tipped fur giving a grizzled, "silver-tipped" appearance. In the Yellowstone ecosystem, many grizzly bears have a light brown girth band. Height: About 3-1/2 ft (1.0 m) at the shoulder. Weight: Male: 216-717 lbs (98-325 kg); Female: 200-428 lbs (91-194 kg) (Blanchard 1987). Home Range Size: Males: 813-2075 mi (2106-5374 km Females: 309-537 mi (801-1391 km (Blanchard and Knight 1991). Life Expectancy: 15 - 20 years in the wild; 30+ years in captivity. Physical and Behavioral Characteristics Behaviorally, black bears are generally much less aggressive than grizzly bears and rely on their ability to climb trees to allow themselves and their cubs to escape predators such as wolves, grizzly bears, or other black bears. Grizzly bears are generally one and one-half to two times larger than black bears of the same sex and age class within the same geographic region. Grizzly bears are also more aggressive than black bears and more likely to rely on their size and aggressiveness to protect themselves and their cubs from predators or other perceived threats. Another behavioral difference between black bears and grizzly bears is the length of time cubs are under their mother's care. Black bear cubs are born in the winter den, spend the summer following birth with their mother, den with her again in the fall, then separate from her early the next summer as yearlings. Grizzly bear cubs spend two and one-half and sometimes three and one-half years under their mother's care before separation.

Not meaning to extol our own virtues, but exn.ca's own Bear Den is a pretty cool place to stop to find out about the plight of grizzlies. But that's just a part of the bigger Bear Den picture. There's a great bear quiz, information on every other species of bear and even useful information on how to survive a bear attack. And if you're a real bear freak, you can find out when bear-related TV programs are scheduled to appear in the coming weeks on Discovery Channel Canada. And if you haven't had your fill of bear facts from the Animal Tracks site, you can also head here for even more bear trivia. Lots of content - and it looks great to boot!
