Welcome to The Kratt Club web site! This site is dedicated to those crazy creature adventurers, Chris and Martin Kratt. Young, old or somewhere in-between, Chris and Martin have a way of capturing our attention and making our lives a little fuller. Their enthusiasm is contagious, and if you've had the opportunity to meet them in person, you know that they are all genuine. Their love and caring for animals and children have touched the hearts of many. Following their dream of preserving wildlife, in 2000 the Kratt Brothers created a "creaturefuge" named Grizzly Gulch. With the help of Creature Heroes of all ages the dream of preserving the Grizzly Bears of North America is becoming a reality! Hot off the Presses!!! The Kratt Club 2003 Calendar is soon to be available!!! Check back for more information! Dawn Invites Americans to "Save-A-Duck"

25. Eastern Slopes Grizzly Bear Project
for scientific information about the cumulative effect of human development and activities on grizzly bears in this area.
http://www.canadianrockies.net/Grizzly
"More than any species, grizzlies represent wilderness.
If the grizzly bear, with its wide ranging habits, can survive,
then many other species will survive."
Welcome!
Canada’s Central Rockies Ecosystem (CRE) , which includes Banff National Park and Alberta’s Kananaskis Country, is one of the most developed landscapes in North America where grizzly bears still survive. The Eastern Slopes Grizzly Bear Project (ESGBP) was initiated in 1994 to address the urgent need for scientific information about the cumulative effect of human development and activities on grizzly bears in this area. The ESGBP actively promotes the application of this information in management and conservation contexts. Part of our mission is to make sure the information we collect about these bears – their status, the challenges they face, and what can be done to help them – is widely available. There is a range of information on this site – a grade school teacher will find fundamental information about grizzly bears to give his/her class, and a grizzly bear researcher will find copies of most of the research papers we have published. For more information about the project and its accomplishments to date, click the "About the Project" button.

26. The Bears Of Bute - Grizzly & Black Bear Wildlife Adventure Tours, Campbell Rive
Offers wildlife tours, featuring grizzly and black bears. Photo gallery, tour details, and location information are presented.
http://www.bearsofbute.com/
Welcome to BEAR COUNTRY! See grizzly and black bears on a day long Bears of Bute Wildlife Eco Tour from Campbell River to the wild and remote west coast of BC. Among the narrow inlets that reach deep into the mainland coast of British Columbia, Canada, spectacular Bute Inlet cuts the deepest into the coastal mountain range. The dense forests and river estuaries of Bute are the ancestral home to the great brown bear of North America, known as the grizzly bear.
The big bears live among the tall Douglas firs and the Western Red cedar that thrive along the shores of glacier fed rivers and streams teeming with fish. This prime grizzly habitat, north of the Strait of Georgia, is also the traditional land of the Homalco First Nations people.
Every year in the late summer and the early fall, the bears of Bute Inlet gather on the banks of the rivers and streams to participate in one of nature's most incredible displays - the return of the Salmon! The huge Pacific salmon return from the ocean to the fresh water streams and rivers where they spawn and finally die.
One of the last challenges in the life cycle of the salmon is making it past the gathering of grizzly and black bears on the river banks, preparing for the long, cold winter ahead by gorging themselves on as much fish as they can catch (and keep for themselves - when you have a concentration of grizzlies, size definitely matters).

The largest United States population is in Yellowstone National Park.
The grizzly is the most aggressive of all the bears. The grizzly has no enemies or predators. The grizzly rarely fights and when he does, it usually is the victor. Grizzlies forage for food in the spring and summer. They are omnivorous, which means that they eat both vegetable and animal matter. Its diet includes fruits, berries, nuts, roots, fish, rodents, and occasionally other animals. It can spot food up to 18 miles away with its keen sense of smell. On the rare occasion that the grizzly kills an animal, the kill can feed a sow (female) and her cubs for up to a week. The grizzly is a great fisherman. It stands in the river and can scoop a salmon out of the water with its enormous paw. Another method the grizzly uses is the "wait and pounce" method. In this, the grizzly waits for a fish to swim by and then, jumps into the water smashing the fish to the bottom of the riverbed.

THE AMERICAN GRIZZLY BEAR
This web site is intended to provide information on the current status of the American Grizzly Bear. Today, the grizzly bear population in the lower forty-eight states numbers about 1,000reduced from an estimated 50,000 to 100,000 before the West was settled. Grizzly bear habitat has dwindled to less than 2% of what it once was. Fragmented zones of existence are all that remain for the American Grizzly Bear. Destruction and degradation of grizzly bear habitat and human-caused mortality are the greatest threats to the continued existence of the grizzly bear in the lower forty-eight. Existing grizzly bear habitat must be protected, depleted grizzly bear habitat restored, and fragmented grizzly bear recovery zones connected by corridors if the American Grizzly Bear is to "recover".

Closing Roads Protects Grizzly Bears and Their Habitat
An Essay by James Musgrove
Return To Home Page The American Grizzly Bear we spend. The devastation to the Targhee National Forest due to road building and logging can be clearly seen in aerial photographs and even from space. It is not a pretty sight, and the scars from road construction and clearcutting are certainly not limited to the Targhee. All grizzly bears in the lower 48 states were listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 1975. The original Grizzly Bear Recovery Plan Grizzly Bear Recovery Plan . An introductory comment to the 1993 Plan states, "Recovery plans delineate reasonable actions that are believed to be required to recover and/or protect the species." Appendix B of the Recovery Plan is Road Management in Grizzly Bear Habitat . It includes the following, "The management of roads is the most powerful tool available to balance the needs of bears and all other wildlife with the activities of humans." Management of roads to protect grizzly bears and their habitat requires limiting total road densities and open road densities. Since so many thousands of miles of logging roads have been constructed over the years in grizzly bear habitat, closing and obliterating roads is required to bring any semblance of balance between "the needs of bears and all other wildlife with the activities of humans." Another telling statement from Appendix B—"In general, increased human access on open roads and continued human use of closed roads have overall detrimental effects on grizzly populations. Roads and road activity allow continued bear mortality risk, increase habituation of bears, and effectively decrease usable habitat."

Bears and People Can Share The Same Land!

Naturalists, Charlie Russell and Maureen Enns are undertaking this very important challenge through their project the Kamchatka Grizzlies of the Far East. This study is about testing theories that could allow for people to share habitat with this animal in ways that are safe and sustainable and also suggests ways to enjoy these large predators.
The study area for this project is situated at Kambalnoe Lake at the southern tip of the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Russian Far East. This is one of the last great wilderness areas left in the world and provides an ideal environment for this study because the bears in that area have little or no contact with human beings other than those who are studying them.
This project began by locating the ideal site and constructing a cabin at the foot of the Kambalnoe Volcano which became their base camp. In 1997, Charlie and Maureen raised 3 orphaned grizzly cubs (Chico, Biscuit and Rosie) and reintroduced them to the wild. They have returned each summer since then to continue their relationships with these cubs who have become the central participants to their study of human coexistence with bears. They are now 5 years old and about 450 pounds.
The study in Kamchatka, Russia will enter its 7th year in 2002. Many of our research goals are now being achieved. We have proven it is possible to peacefully co-exist with grizzly bears as close neighbors. Now our efforts to consider the legacy for our work, by conserving in perpetuity the Southern tip of Kamchatka begins. As we focus more on the educational focus, we are excited to announce that our first book
