If You Encounter a Bear?
1.7 meg (1.5 minute)
Quicktime Movie of a black bear A commonly asked question is "What do I do if I run into a bear?" There is no easy answer. Like people, bears react differently to each situation. The best thing you can do is to make sure you have read all the suggestions for hiking and camping in bear country and follow them. Avoid encounters by being alert and making noise. Bear Attacks
Almost 2 million people visit Waterton-Glacier yearly, and it seems that one or two bear attacks occur each year. The vast majority of these occur because people have surprised the bear. In this type of situation the bear may attack as a defensive maneuver. If you surprise a bear, here are a few guidelines to follow that may help:
  • Talk quietly or not at all; the time to make loud noise is before you encounter a bear. Try to detour around the bear if possible. Do not run! Back away slowly, but stop if it seems to agitate the bear.

Project Title of Unit: Bears of the Pacific NW
Level and Year: Elementary Grade 3
Designed by: Kerry Trobec and Mary Reece
Amount of time estimated for implementing this unit: 4-6 weeks (including other instruction and activities.)
Planning Components
I. Project Objectives This project will be used as a component of a unit about bears. The main focus is to become familiar with similarities and differences between the three types of bears in the N.W. (American black bear, Grizzly, and Brown or Kodiak bears). The project integrates reading, science, social studies, math skills, and concepts. Teacher-designed activity sheets(comparison charts, Venn diagrams) journaling, drawing, and large group discussions, as well as small group and individual interviews, will be used to assess student progress during the unit. Students will have choices for designing a final product, a conservation poster, a large diarama, or a Hyperstudio project. The students will gain the necessary skills to use the Web to access up to date information about bear sitings, population changes and their causes, including human factor, and on-going research for extension activities. Project Alignment with EALRs Reading . The student understands the meaning of what is read. comprehend important ideas and details

Mechanic's Liens
A mechanic's lien has nothing to do with repairing your car. A mechanic, by law, is a tradesman, artist, or anyone who works with tools, including carpenters, electricians, plumbers, roofers, and a host of others. A lien is a legal claim to real property until a debt is paid. If you employ a tradesperson or contractor to work on your home and then, following a dispute, refuse to pay, the worker has the right to file a lien. The lien is a claim on your real property such as your house. Rather than just demanding payment from the homeowner, which might be ignored, the lien makes the property responsible for payment.
Why a Lien?
In some cases, you may receive a lien even though you have paid the general contractor in full. In this case, it is probable that the general contractor did not pay a subcontractor, such as a concrete company or roofer. Perhaps the general contractor was late making payments or, in a worst-case scenario, has gone bankrupt. Regardless, the tradesperson has a legal right to be paid and has filed claim on your property for the amount owed. Having to pay twice for the work seems unfair. The lien law, however, is based on long-held presumptions that the homeowner, whose property value has been enhanced by the work performed, bears ultimate responsibility for all debts incurred.

By Andy Timmins, Bear Project Leader Current estimates place New Hampshire's black bear population between 4,500 and 5,000 animals. Age analysis of harvested bears suggests that bear population growth has leveled off. Bears entered their winter dens in good condition and productivity during 2000 and 2001 appears to have been good. In 2001, hunters harvested a record 527 bears. Still-hunters accounted for 295 bears, bait hunters took 169 and hound hunters tallied 63 bears. The 2001 harvest distribution was 134 bears in the North Region, 195 in the White Mountains Region, 156 in the Central Region, 31 in the Southwest-1 Region, 11 in the Southwest-2 Region, and in the Southeast Region. New Hampshire's management plan calls for regional bear densities of 0.6 bears per square mile in the North Region, 0.7 bears per square mile in the White Mountains Region, 0.3 bears per square mile in the Central and Southwest Regions, and very low densities in the Southeast Region.
