The History of basketball A game that started with 18 men in a YMCA gymnasium in Springfield, Mass., has grown into a game that more than 300 million people play worldwide. The man who created this instantly successful sport was Dr. James Naismith. Under orders from the head of Physical Education at the School for Christian Workers, Naismith had 14 days to create an indoor game that would provide an "athletic distraction" for a rowdy class through the brutal New England winter. Naismith's invention didn't come easily. His first intention was to bring outdoor games indoors such as soccer and lacrosse. These games proved too physical and cumbersome. After brainstorming some new ideas, Naismith developed basketball's original 13 rules and consequently, the game of basketball. The new game was played with a soccer ball, peach baskets and nine to a side. This first contest is believed to have been played Dec. 21, 1891.

Coach Captains Roster Schedule ... Haverford Home Page History Women's basketball was among the first three sports the college adopted when it went "fully-coed" in 1980-81. The founding coach was Julie Soreiro, who moved on to head coaching positions at Philadelphia U. and Penn before her current assignment at Colorado College. The program grew throughout the 1980's under such mentors as eventual U.S. Lacrosse coach Sue Stahl, and had many fine players, though lacking a consistent scorer. That description was finally appropriated by Amy Taylor '92, who became Haverford's first 1,000-point scorer. Taylor was a two-time all-Middle Atlantic Conference performer and Haverford captain, a three-time basketball MVP, and the 1992 winner of the Varsity Cup, Haverford's highest athletic award. In her junior season, the program reached .500 for the first time under new head coach Dick Wiseman. Besides Taylor '92, other Fords who found success in life after basketball include Beth Chittick '91, who battled back to play with torn ACLs in both knees to play and is now a veterinarian, and all-Centennial selections Koren Miller '95, Claudette Pirwitz '96, and Colleen Leonard '98. Only injuries kept Claudette and Colleen from reaching the 1,000-point mark, and very few teams could contain these talented and dedicated players.

Coach Captains Roster Schedule ... Haverford Home Page History Many historians believe that the first intercollegiate men's basketball game in the East was Haverford's 6-4 defeat of Temple in 1895. The college did not have a varsity, however, until 1918-19 when intramural player Ben Cooper '18 inspired the program after his graduation. The Fords' men's basketball MVP award is named for Cooper, who later served Haverford as alumni secretary. Playing home games in the friendly confines of the (now Ryan) Gymnasium, Haverford produced its first 1,000-point career scorer in slashing guard Phil D'Arrigo '56, who once scored 100 points (48 and 52) in successive games against excellent opponents. Alumni Field House opened in 1957 to chants of "Roll, Fords, Roll" as former Penn star Ernie Prudente built a fast-break offense around quality big men. Larry Forman '60, an acrobatic 1,000-point scorer, led HC to wins over Delaware and Navy. Haverford regularly qualified for the Middle Atlantic Conference playoffs behind 6'8" Hunter Rawlings '66, who was MAC South MVP, an NCAA Postgraduate Scholar, and is now president of Cornell University. The program awakened after a sluggish decade in 1995-96 when senior 1,000-point scorers Jamal Elliott and Chris Guiton helped the Fords advance to the Centennial Conference semifinals. Guiton, a great long-range shooter who later played professionally in Europe, and Elliott, a magical playmaker, both earned first-team all-Centennial during their careers and were co-recipients of The Varsity Cup, Haverford's highest athletic honor.

Under Coach Shilts' leadership, the KVCC men's basketball program has established one of the finest traditions in all of college basketball. In the thirteen years previous to his arrival at KVCC, the Cougars had enjoyed only one winning season, a 9-8 year in the school's first year of competition, 1968-69. The Cougars' overall record from 1968-69 until Shilts' arrival was 103-183. With Shilts at the helm, the Cougars have won 470 and lost only 225 in twenty-three seasons. But, perhaps even more impressive is the fact that over 50 of his former players, while pursuing their Bachelor's Degrees, have gone on to participate at four-year institutions at all levels. Many of these former players are currently coaching in middle schools, high schools, and colleges in Michigan and across the country. The 1991-92 season saw Coach Shilts' Cougars post another record setting 26-7 season. The Cougars were nationally ranked most of the season, averaged 99.0 points per game, set a new team field goal percentage mark of .516 AND a new defensive FG pct. mark of .420 along with a number of other impressive statistical marks. This Cougar team flirted with greatness as they lost in the regional tournament to eventual national champion Toledo Owens, 95-87. Toledo breezed through the remaining regional and national tournament games finishing 37-2. The Cougars also gave Coach Shilts his 300th career victory with a 101-96 league-opening win against Lake Michigan College.

ISBN: 0-9703578-2-6 Inside: A Tribute To SEC and LSU Great Pete Maravich, the greatest scorer in the history of college basketball3,667 points in just three seasons (1969-71); without the three-point shot.
During its storied history on the hardwood, the Southeastern Conference has won eight NCAA Championships and three NIT Championships. Remarkably, three of those NCAA titles have come during the last eight years (1994, 1996, and 1998). In 1998-99, the league had its string of consecutive Final Four appearances end at six, however, it also marked the eighth year in a row that the conference placed a team in the Elite Eight. Furthermore, during the last nine NCAA Tournaments (1993-2001), the SEC's nine Final Four appearances is tied with the ACC for the most by any league during that span.
Since 1990, the SEC has become the nation’s most successful basketball-playing conference. During that time, the league has seen two of its teams win three national championships (Arkansas in 1994, Kentucky in 1996 and 1998). On two separate occasions the SEC has had two teams in the Final Four during the same season (Arkansas and Florida in 1994 and Kentucky and Mississippi State in 1996). Additionally, every SEC team has made at least one NCAA Tournament appearance in the last seven seasons, demonstrating clearly the impressive parity and balanced strength of the league over the past few years.
Through the years the SEC has produced some of college basketball's finest players and coaches. The SEC has produced two National Players of theYear in LSU's Pete Maravich and Shaquille O'Neal and three GTE Academic All-American of the Year honors, including Georgia's two-time winner Alec Kessler. The league has produced seven inductees into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, in addition to its many All-Americans. Furthermore, from Kentucky's Adolph Rupp, to LSU's Dale Brown, to Auburn's Joel Eaves and Mississippi State's Babe McCarthy, the SEC boasts a long list of legendary coaches, with an impressive group of newcomers like Arkansas' Nolan Richardson, Kentucky's Tubby Smith and Ole Miss' Rob Barnes' recently following in the heavy footsteps of their successful, leading predecessors.
