News Learning Departments Students with disabilities need resources and supportand so do their teachers. W hen Drew Houlihan entered his classroom his first year of teaching, he thought he was prepared to meet the needs of all his students. He was assigned a part-time classroom assistant and he had only 23 students in his class. But soon after his first week, "My confidence dropped and my vision for my classroom had to be adjusted," says Houlihan, a second-grade teacher at A.B. Combs Leadership Magnet Elementary School in Raleigh, North Carolina. "Eight of my students received special education services and were pulled out of my classroom at least four days a week. I needed to keep updated on my students' progress, and I wanted to collaborate on strategies." Adequate time for planning and collaboration is critical when working with special needs students. All classroom teachersbut beginning teachers especiallyneed time to adapt materials for students who learn differently, to communicate with parents about student progress, and to collaborate with other staff members about appropriate strategies.

Schools go high-tech to battle truancy
I n the last few years, schools across the nation, striving to achieve innovation and excellence in the classroom, have been hit by what one Missouri principal describes as a "technology tidal wave." This phenomenon, combined with a legislative demand for achieving national standards and broad recognition that industry needs a more technologically literate workforce, has created a new and different landscape in U.S. education. As the 2002 school year boots up, educators are finding that laptops, e-mail and Internet connections are fast becoming the chalkboards and No. 2 pencils of the 21st century. CNN.com takes an in-depth look what some children around the country will be doing in class this year.

About This Program
You can enroll in Correspondence courses at any time, study in the comfort of your home, and set your own pace. Anyone may register for our courses regardless of residence or place of employment. You work on an individual basis with faculty members who have designed the instructional material and respond to the assignments you submit. It's a convenient, relatively inexpensive and highly personalized way to take courses. The beauty of correspondence study is its flexibility. It allows individuals to overcome obstacles to traditional study and to meet a variety of special educational needs.
Now, in the increasingly competitive environment, it's crucial for individuals and organizations to stay ahead of the curve. Distance education through the Correspondence Program ensures that result. Through instructor-led training courses offered by mail and online, course participants gain the knowledge, practical skills, and broader vision that make them more effective.
When travel costs, per diem, and time away from the office is excessive; when the instruction must be presented to many sites and requires highly-qualified technical expertise to augment the instruction; when it needs to be presented frequently to small groups; and, when the material is not likely to change, then media-based instruction, individualized instruction or correspondence study is preferred. Those lucky students using the Correspondence Program have all three options: web-based instructional format, the ability to e-mail instructors directly from the learning site and the ability to talk about issues with other students either through a discussion board or a realtime online chat.

http://standards.nctm.org/document/chapter2/equity.htm

The Equity Principle
Making the vision of the Principles and Standards for School Mathematics a reality for all students, prekindergarten through grade 12, is both an essential goal and a significant challenge. Achieving this goal requires raising expectations for students' learning, developing effective methods of supporting the learning of mathematics by all students, and providing students and teachers with the resources they need.
Equity is interwoven with the other Principles. All students need access each year to a coherent, challenging mathematics curriculum taught by competent and well-supported mathematics teachers. Moreover, students' learning and achievement should be assessed and reported in ways that point to areas requiring prompt additional attention. Technology can assist in achieving equity and must be accessible to all students.
Equity requires high expectations and worthwhile opportunities for all.

    • The opening of four new elementary schools this week; Archdiocese of Chicago elementary school students performed consistently above the national norm in standardized achievement tests administered earlier this year; A $45 million capital expansion program at 20 schools in Chicago and Cook and Lake county suburbs is nearing completion.
Dr. Wolsonovich also reported that a new $1 million Tuition Covenant fund has been launched by the Archdiocese to provide tuition grants to 33- qualified elementary schools for families which meet certain economic criteria. The new voluntary plan computes per-student tuition rates based on all the actual costs of operating a school and dividing that number by the expected enrollment. This figure represents the actual cost, typically $2,745, of educating one student. This formula results in tuition increases which are offset by grants from several sources, including the new Archdiocesan fund. In addition, the superintendent noted that the Office of Catholic Schools has been reorganized, a new technology plan adopted, and a year-long strategic planning initiative will be launched. The new initiative will engage school administrators, teachers, parents, school board members, pastors and parish leaders in a visioning process to build stronger, more focused schools to serve the needs of a broad range of Catholic schools students.

Graduate Program in Reading and Literacy Philosophy and Goals We believe in a social constructivist philosophy that emphasizes the social, cultural contexts in which readers and writers are engaging with a variety of modes and forms of print and non-print literacy. We are committed to literacy in the community, creating and strengthening partnerships with schools and parents, and helping teachers and administrators address, challenge and continue the conversation on the new standards for teaching and learning. We want graduates to leave the program feeling confident as shapers of school designs as well as implementers of literacy programs. Profiles of candidates and program graduates
Candidates come from a mixed range of ethnic and multi-racial backgrounds. Approximately half of the enrollees come out of the Brooklyn College School of Education undergraduate program. Others have graduated from private and state colleges in the New York, New Jersey, Connecticut tri-state area, as well as from colleges across the country and around the world. What the program offers
The Reading Program will provide highly qualified candidates with in-depth knowledge and understanding of the process of literacy acquisition and literacy learning. The program offers intensive focus on the theory and practice of literacy education, curriculum design, instruction and assessment, and addresses the special needs of readers and writers in inclusive learning environments. We are excited by the developments of the new requirements for New York State certification in literacy as a challenge and an opportunity to attend to the needs of children from birth through adolescence.
