Aviation History of the San Fernando Valley
From 1911 until today, the San Fernando Valley has been witness to a wide range of aviation, rocket and space travel development and history. Today, nearly all traces of that history have been razed in an effort to gain renewed growth. Our great history now resides in books, in this web page and in the memories of those who made it happen. We need to document this history before we lose it forever, particularly the secret projects at the Lockheed Skunk Works and other research and defense plants. If you have knowledge of aviation and rocket design, production or other aviation history, please write it down or tape it for preservation. If you have artifacts: photographs, films, books or anything else related, consider donating it to the Burbank Aviation Museum group or some other publicly oriented group for preservation. It's our history and it should be preserved and honored. Creating The Future Of Flight At Boeing BC-17X Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA) Product Development team is the source for the ideas and products that have changed commercial aviation history . But history is only a starting place for this diverse, creative team who spend more time thinking about tomorrow than dwelling on the past. The latest concept to leap from the BCA Product Development drawing boards into international headlines is the Boeing 7E7, an all-new airplane concept focused on bringing more economical solutions to airlines, a better flight experience to passengers and improved environmental performance to the world. And the drawing boards - which are really high-end computer stations these days - are still full, and the Product Development team is busy working on other ideas such as:
  • New products for the future. Derivatives of existing airplanes that will enhance the value of those products. Features for our current products that continuously improve value and safety.

Museum Info Exhibits Education Foundation ... Home In America's 20th century history, few military organizations played a more crucial role than Naval Aviation. In war at sea, eclipsing the battleship as the decisive weapon, aircraft carriers projected their powerful air wings over vast expanses of water, striking with surprise at enemy fleets and land bases, then disappearing with equal swiftness. In times of peace, the carrier and her battle group provided American political leaders a flexible, always ready and potent way to respond to regional crises wherever and whenever American vital interests were threatened. "Where are the carriers?" has been the first question asked by American presidents at the start of every national security crisis since the end of World War II.
Naval Aviation has also been at the cutting edge of aerospace history: the first successful crossing of the Atlantic by an aircraft, exploration of high altitude flight, exploration of the Arctic and Antarctic and exploration of outer space. Coast Guard, Marine Corps and Navy pilots pioneered the use of one of the

The Pathfinders - around the globe I n the years following World War I, aviators looked at the globe and saw an opportunity in every corner to set a record and gain a place in history. The flights they con templated and completed may not have been the kind of nonstop flights that immortalized Lindbergh, but each one opened new airways between different and remote p arts of the world and shrank the globe step by step. For every flight that brought glory to a flier or aircraft, there were many other attempts that ultimately went awry and some that proved fatal for the pilots. The routes were well known and the news media followed each one as teams and nations set out to fly them: the South Atlantic; the overland air route from England to Australia; the southern

America's Airports:
Airfield Development, 1918–1947
Janet R. Daly Bednarek
Across the country, Americans take for granted the con- venience of air flight from one city to another. The federal role in managing air traffic and the cooperative corporate planning of major airlines mask to some degree the fact that those airports are not jointly owned or managed, but rather are local public responsibilities. In this unique history of the places travelers in cities across America call "the" airport, Janet R. Daly Bednarek traces the evolving relationship between cities and their airports during the crucial formative years of 1918–47. She highlights the early history of experimentation and innovation in the development of municipal airports and identifies the factors—including pressure from the U.S. Post Office and the military, neither of which had the independent resources to deve- lop a network of terminals—that made American cities responsible for their own air access. She shows how boosterism accelerated the trend toward local construction and ownership of the fields. In the later years of the period, Bednarek shows, cities found they could not shoulder the whole burden of airport construction, maintenance, and improvement. As part of a general trend during the 1930s toward a strong, direct relationship between cities and the federal government, cities began to lobby for federal aid for their airports, a demand that was eventually met when World War II increased the federal stakes in their functioning.

General Aviation in the United States
Janet R. Daly Bednarek and Michael H. Bednarek
General aviation encompasses all the ways aircraft are used beyond commercial and military flying: private flights, barnstormers, cropdusters, and more. Janet R. Daly Bednarek and Michael H. Bednarek have taken on the formidable task of discussing the hundred-year history of this diverse field by focusing on the most important figures and organizations in general aviation and the major producers of general aviation aircraft and engines. In addition, the authors chart the boom and bust cycle of general aviation manufacturers, the rising costs and increased regulations that have accompanied a decline in pilots, the creation of an influential general aviation lobby in Washington, and the growing popularity of "type" clubs, created to maintain aircraft whose average age is twenty-eight years. Our mission: to tell the full and true story -
" what actually happened " (Leopold von Ranke) - of the life and achievements of Glenn Hammond Curtiss - and thus to restore him to the pinnacle in American history he so richly deserves.
This site is the 'brainchild' of Jack Carpenter, an 'avocational historian' who's studied and written of America's early aviation history since 1974. Since his youth Jack has been interested in "what actually happened" (e.g., in 1944, at Illinois College, he had a private interview with Russia's Aleksandr Kerensky). An Eagle Scout, he was in Naval aviation training when World War II ended and 19 when commissioned a Naval Officer and BNS-degreed from Notre Dame. Then, though accepted at Harvard, he returned to his native California and earned an MBA at Stanford. Jack's career includes corporate marketing, management, residential development in Southern California and New England, and antiques and fine art.

The Carruthers Aviation Collection The Carruthers Aviation Collection on the history of aviation was presented to Claremont McKenna College in 1950 by the Rev. and Mrs. John F. B. Carruthers. Subsequent gifts and purchases have increased the collection to its present size of approximately 4,000 volumes. The strong emphasis on World War I aeronautical history is represented by Italian, French, British and American publications. Of comparable interest is material on the history and development of ballon flight. L'Art de Voyager dans les Airs, ou Les Ballons (Paris, 1784) and the 1786 English publication Airopaidia . . . printed for the author and illustrator, Thomas Baldwin at Chester, give descriptions and instructions for the obviously growing popularity of the sport. The latter includes colored plates of views from a balloon, maps and tables. Mr. Carruthers collected information about early experiments with flight, imaginary or real, from Leonardo to M. Egerton, whose guide to Waterloo, Here and There Over the Water (London, 1825) includes amusing colored plates indicating propulsion by steam from a patent kettle over the English Channel. A limited edition from the Chiswick Press, 1919, The British King Who Tried to Fly. . . gives extracts from old chronicles and histories relating to Bladud, ninth king of England. Journals, reference items, maps, and charts accompany the books in this collection. Contact Us Special Collections Homepage Libraries Homepage Search

I'm the Owner/Developer of this site, Patrick Ranfranz-Private Pilot as of March 2002. I have developed this site with my own time and money to document the history of Charles Lindbergh's life and because I share his dream of flight. I'm currently trying to pursue my dream further by finding away to build flight time and flying experience without breaking the bank. The cost of my private pilot license last year and the current cost to rent Cessna 172s from the local FBO is making flying very expensive. I'm interested in any web development/consulting offers that can help me pursue my dream of flying further. Please contact me at webmaster@charleslindbergh.com or call 651-490-9720.
