GEORGES SEURAT During his short life, Georges-Pierre Seurat was an innovator in an age of innovators in the field of art. This french painter was a leader in a movement called neo-impressionist in the late 19th century. Unlike the broad brushstrokes of the impressionist, Seurat developed a technique called pointillism or divisonism. In this method, he used small dots or strokes of contrasting color to create the subtle changes contained within the painting. Seurat was an art scientist in that he spent much of his life, searching for how different colors and linear effects would change the look or texture of a canvas. He was painstaking in his work, the technique he chose taking much longer to produce a work of art. Even so in his life, he produced over 500 paintings or drawings. Seurat was born in Paris on December 2, 1859, in Paris. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1878 and 1879. While at the institute, the young Seurat was strongly influenced by works of Rembrandt and Francisco de Goya. A private man, Seurat after he was an established artist, would produce one large canvas a year for a total of seven monumental paintings. Along with this he produced 60 smaller paintings. He was very regimented, spending his winters in Paris and his summers on France's northern coast. In 1891, his life was cut short suddenly at the age of 31 in Paris, but even in this short time, his impact on the world of art will withstand the ages.

I think if there is a need to label such artists (and often times there seems to be such a need) I would say that Seurat serves as a transitional figure between the work of the Impressionists and the work of Paul Cezanne. Seurat re-established formality and structure into painting that would later be picked up by abstract artists and modern art. Form, color, and line were a lifelong pursuit for Georges and while he was influenced by the work of the Impressionists (particularly Monet and Manet) Seurat sought to find order and structure in painting. This was a time in history when the notion that "everything is derived from natural law" was very vogue. These notions were not lost on Seurat. He examined the color theory of Chevreul and believed, like Delacroix, that color could be expressive of emotion. Seeking structure and discipline, Seurat was probably also familiar with David Sutter's idea that the "laws of color harmony can be learned as one learns the laws of harmony in music". The mathematician, Charles Henry, also lectured on the emotional value and symbolism of line and color. From these sources, Georges Seurat developed his theory of divisionism and thus began what art critic Felix Feneon called Neo-Impressionism.

Other artists Georges Seurat by Lara Grieve One artist who was directly influenced by, but who also rebelled against, the Impressionist movement was Georges Seurat (1859-91). Although his career, in which he produced only seven major works, was cut short by his untimely death at the age of 31, he was an influential and important artistic figure. Seurat was born into a family of inventors and manufacturers. He was taught art at the École des Beaux-Arts under a disciple of Ingres, Henri Lehmann. Importantly he not only studied the work of Delacroix, the Barbizon painters and the Impressionists but also detailed art theory, particularly that of colour. One crucial colour theory was derived from the technique of tapestry-making where colours could not be mixed, like pigment in painting, but had to be created through juxtaposed thread. This theory, as well as the idea of the intense quality of colour in light, rather than pigment, led Seurat to develop a technique of breaking up colour much more systematically than any of the Impressionists had done. He called his theory, developed from these ideas, Chromo-luminism . Like Pissarro, who was by the mid 1880s tiring of Impressionism, Seurat wished to move away from their romantic ideals towards a more scientific mode of painting.
