Critical Fall Harvest Period
Many farmers are taking advantage of excellent late summer drying conditions to complete another cut of hay where that is possible. Be aware of the Critical Fall Harvest dates and the impact on stand survival. The risk of alfalfa winterkill increases by harvesting during this period, and should be weighed against the immediate need for feed. Alfalfa regrowth following late season cutting uses root reserves required for winter survival. Sufficient top growth is also needed to hold snow and insulate overwintering plants. Refer to Publication 811 "Agronomy Guide" for a map detailing the Critical Fall Harvest Period for Ontario. CORN
Yield potential has suffered due to the dry weather conditions experienced during much of the grain fill period. Corn silage harvest is underway and 2 weeks ahead of schedule in the southwest and grain harvest may not be far behind.

Transgenic Crops in Indiana: Short-term issues for farmers

Agronomy Dept., Purdue Univ. West Lafayette IN 47907-1150
What's in a Name? The phrase "genetically modified organism" and its acronym "GMO", as they are being used in debates throughout the world, refer primarily to those crop varieties that contain genes physically transferred from another species. Such crop varieties are more accurately described as being "transgenic" and will be referred to as such in this short article. Transgenics as Agronomic Inputs for Indiana Farmers. First of all, let's recognize that insect-resistant or herbicide tolerant varieties are NOT CRITICAL for the successful production of corn and soybean in Indiana! In other words, growing non transgenics will not result in economic ruin for most Indiana farmers! Secondly, you do NOT need a contract to grow non-transgenic crops if you are simply growing for the marketplace. In other words, growing non-transgenics will not automatically require efforts to segregate and certify non-transgenic status. However, if you want to aim for a non-transgenic market premium, you should arrange for a contract or agreement with the grain buyer to guarantee that your non-transgenic grain has a home this fall. Also, recognize that fulfilling such contracts may require you to certify that the grain you harvest and deliver is non transgenic. The ramification of this is that producing certified non-transgenic crops is not cost-free!

  • Table 1 Indiana agriculture is based on crops that were once considered new. Though a process of introduction, trial and error, Indiana agricultural systems have been stabilized into a narrow group of crop species based on maize (2.4 million ha), soybeans (2.0 million ha), traditional grasses and legumes for hay and pasture (0.8 million ha), and small grains (0.4 million ha) with only about 20,000 ha in horticultural crops. As a result of the concentration of crop species, the majority of Indiana growers have relatively few alternatives, so that low prices on major commodities have a disastrous impact on Indiana agriculture. New crops offer alternatives to increase farm income, improve diets, lower costs, expand markets, diversify products, and increase exports. However, there is a dilemma to new crops developments. Processors and other entiities in the production chain are not interested in establishing facilities for new crops unless volume and markets are assured, while farmers will not plant without assured markets. This is the weak link in the chain of new crop development. Successful development of new crops and plant products requires a working partnership between scientist, farmers, industry, and government.
