Reviderad: av Gustaf Naeser The Ada Programming Assignment
    Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to gain basic understanding of the Ada programming language and some of its constructs. Some problems are related to the real-time aspects of programming in Ada other problems should make the student familiar with the Ada programming style. Working Groups The assignment can be solved individually or in groups of two persons. In the case of a group doing the assignment, both students shall be able to describe all parts of the solution. Report The report must consist of the following:
    • Front page , which can be obtained from the web.
    • Listings of a well commented and well structured programs.
    • Illustrative printouts of test-runs for each program.
    • Pointers to source code, executables and start-up scripts necessary to run the program. Please, observe file-access rights, ie. all files must be readable by the examiner.
    Language and Compiler
The assignment should be solved in Ada95 so it can be compiled with the departments GNU's Ada95 compiler "gnat". (The assignment can be developed any Ada as long as the above holds.) When using gnat all files should have the suffixes .ads or .adb , for specifications and bodies respective. Each file should contain exactly

Ada Policy As indicated in the April 29, 1997, OASD Memorandum below, the DoD requirement to use Ada is in the process of being replaced. A number of the documents below are affected by such action. Other documents are retained here primarily for background purposes. For those of you with questions in this area, there are Ada policy and waiver contacts for each of the three services, and for the independent components (such as DISA, etc...) Ada and Beyond: Software Policies for the Department of Defense
The National Research Council's (NRC) public briefing on November 1996 and subsequent report published in March 1997, both reviewing the current rationales for using Ada as the standard programming language of the DoD, discussing changes software engineering has encounted over the last twenty years since the establishment of the Ada program, and forecasting the future of Ada in the DoD. 5000 Documents

    78. Ada Pitfalls
Archivename ada programming pitfalls Last-modified 1997/12/17 Version 0.1 ThisFAQ was compiled and written by Dale Stanbrough with numerous contributions
    http://goanna.cs.rmit.edu.au/~dale/ada/pitfalls/
    S) 1.0 Introduction Q) 1.1 What does this FAQ cover? This FAQ has been created in response to a problem encountered by Joe Gwinn. It aims to distill the old lore, or rules of thumb, about issues in Ada that may be problematic/have unexpected costs in production code. This is to help teams from falling into "beartraps", which can cause extensive grief totally out of proportion to the benefits of the feature being used. Q) 1.2 Where can I find the latest copy of this FAQ? For now until it settles down, I'll host it on http://www.cs.rmit.edu.au/~dale/ada/pitfalls/index.html S) 2.0 Performance problems Q) 2.1 Enumeration Rep Specs Discussion: An enumerated type can have an associated Representation Clause (often called a Rep Spec) which specifies the underlying values to be used for each item in the type. This is often used to match enumerated values with values obtained from either hardware or software (e.g. X11). E.g. type Colours is (Red, Yellow, Green); for Colours'? use (2#0001#, 2#0010#, 2#0100#); However Colours'Pos (Green) still returns 3 (it's position in the enumerated type), not it's underlying representation. This can cause problems when the type is used as an index type in an array, a for loop, or when the 'Pred, 'Succ are used.

    Ada Classes
    Fundamentals of Ada Programming
This class is an introduction to the Ada language. It provides the basic knowledge needed to read existing Ada code, modify it, and to write new programs for existing compilers.
    Audience:
This class is useful for those who have little or no previous experience with the Ada language, and wish to learn enough to read Ada code and write simple Ada programs. Some previous programming experience with a high level language such as C, Pascal, or Fortran is recommended.
    Length: two days Ada Programming
This is a 4-day class plus a project day. The 2-day Fundamentals Class (above) is followed by a project day during which the students write an Ada program. The instructor is not present on the project day and the students are free to work in pairs, groups of three or individually.
