Swenson, May Nature: Poems Old and New
On-Line Text Genre Collection (Poems) (240 pp.) Poem (240 pp.) Keywords Body Self-Image Death and Dying Nature Summary Swenson's poems about the body and death express the essential mystery of human experience and of observing the cycles of the natural world. In "Question" she wonders in metaphor about what will become of the Self after death, "when Body my good / bright dog is dead." In "Death, Great Smoothener" Swenson notices the odd roles that the personified death seems to play. In "Feel Me" the poet ponders the curious last words of her dying father, suspecting a considerable indictment of the living by the dying. In "Death Invited" she details the gruesome ending of a bullfight, with death personified by the bull, dragged from the ring only to be replaced by another: "Here comes trotting, snorting death / let loose again." Commentary Swenson's gift is to observe and catalog accurately while stretching possible meanings to a higher imaginative level. She is therefore both abstract and concrete at once. A vision akin to William Blake's is mixed with a homely vernacular diction like Robert Frost's or perhaps Roethke's, so that even the darker subjects are luminous with Swenson's unusual or new perspectives.

The May Swenson Poetry Award
This annual competition, named for May Swenson, honors her as one of America's most provocative, insouciant, and vital poets. In John Hollander's words, she was "one of our few unquestionably major poets." During her long career, May was loved and praised by writers from virtually every major school of poetry. She left a legacy of nearly fifty years of writing when she died in 1989. She is buried in Logan, Utah, her hometown. Judge for the 2004 competition has not been chosen yet. Please check in again for an update. The winning manuscript receives a $1000 award, publication in the spring of 2004, and royalties.
Guidelines:
  • Submitted collections must be original poetry in English, 50 to 100 pages. No restrictions on form or subject.

Judge for the 2003 competition will be Alicia Ostriker , who is a well-known poet and critic. Ostriker has won the William Carlos Williams award from the Poetry Society of America, the Paterson Poetry Award, the San Francisco State Poetry Center Award, and was a finalist for the National Book Award. Her poetry and essays have appeared in a wide range of major national literary journals. The winning manuscript receives a $1000 award, publication in the spring of 2003, and royalties.

A Nosty Fright
The roldengod and the soneyhuckle,
the sack eyed blusan and the wistle theed
are all tangled with the oison pivy,
the fallen nine peedles and the wumbleteed.
A mipchunk caught in a wobceb tried
to hip and skide in a dandy sune
but a stobler put up a EEP KOFF sign.
Then the unfucky lellow met a phytoon
and was sept out to swea. He difted for drays
till a hassgropper flying happened to spot
the boolish feast all debraggled and wet, covered with snears and tot. Loonmight shone through the winey poods where rushmooms grew among risted twoots. Back blats flew between the twees and orned howls hounded their soots. A kumkpin stood with a tooked creeth on the sindow will of a house where a icked wold itch lived all alone except for her stoombrick, a mitten and a kouse. "Here we part," said hassgropper. "Pere we hart," said mipchunk, too. They purried away on opposite haths, both scared of some "Bat!" or "Scoo!" October was ending on a nosty fright with scroans and greeches and chanking clains, with oblins and gelfs, coaths and urses

Night Practice
I
will
remember
with my breath
to make a mountain,
with my sucked-in breath
a valley, with my pushed-out
breath a mountain. I will make
a valley wider than the whisper, I
will make a higher mountain than the cry,
will with my will breathe a mountain. I will with my will breathe a valley. I will push out a mountain, suck in a valley, deeper than the shout YOU MUST DIE harder, heavier, sharper a mountain than the truth YOU MUST DIE. I will remember. My breath will make a mountain. My will will remember to will. I, suck- ing, pushing, I will breathe a valley, I will breathe a mountain. MAY SWENSON Poem reproduced without permission, but with no intent to profit in any way.
