Mosaic Man
Ronald Sukenick is a marginalized author, a fringe character, and an acquired taste. By fusing autobiography with imagination, he follows in the tradition of such writers as Philip Roth and Stephen Dixon, but Sukenick pushes the limits of the form by incorporating news articles, pop-culture icons, and shifting points of view into his work. He's an innovator in an experimental field. From his critically acclaimed 1968 debut, Up (reissued last year to commemorate its 30th anniversary), through his 11th and most recent book

Cows
Ronald Sukenick
by Pierina Curties (c) 2002 Cows is an e-novel available for free download on the AltX web-site (more about that later). One of the things that excited me about this was that I could also downlaod it for my new palm pilot - which meant that I could read it on the go rather than sitting in front of my computer (don't we all sit in front of the computer way too much?). Instead, carry a smaller computer with you and sit in the sunshine trying to read your PP screen to the even greater detriment of your eyes. (I digress!) I loved Cows and found I got really addicted to it - so much so that I found it hard to read it fast enough on the small screen. So then I went to my desktop and tried reading it there. I found that that caused eye muscle fatigue. In the end, I actually printed parts of it off so that I could read it lying down. So much for my adaptive abilities to the world of new media. Anyway, apart from the physical difficulties of my first attempt at reading an e-novel, I found the story engrossing. Pink Panther movies, Flying High (Airplane) and the X-files all came to mind as I read

RONALD SUKENICK - "MOSAIC MAN" This somewhat thinly-disguised piece of fiction looks at the Jewish novel through the lens of contemporary Pop culture and cyberpunk. It's a combination of history, memoir, daydream and acid trip. Part of this book takes place in World War II era Brooklyn, where Ron dreams of bombing runs over Nazi-occupied Europe with Baseball Commissioner Kennesaw Landis. As a tourist in Jerusalem, he walks through a huge water pipe, still in use, built during the time of the Assyrians, over 2000 years ago. Included is a take-off on the movie The Maltese Falcon. Also here are stories of traveling through Europe, of getting drunk in 1950s Paris, and hanging out with Solidarity protesters in Poland. Using the structure of the Old Testament, Sukenick also gives his take on the Golem story, the patterns of history, the differences among Jews, and the return of the Golden Calf worshipped by the people of ancient Israel. If one section of this book doesn't interest the reader, sit tight; Sukenick will suddenly take this book in a totally different direction. I really enjoyed this story. It keeps the reader engaged, it's very easy to read, and for those who like modern avant-garde fiction, it's especially recommended.

On the Death of Narrative Culture

by Anthony Adinolfi (May 7,1999)
Narrative thinking has always been a reflection of the society of its day. The two share a fundamental relationship, each one subtly affecting the other. This is apparent in our modern day, where technology has come to dominate much of our society. Computers surround us in business, education, media and our homes, changing the way in which we relate to each of these environments and how we communicate with each other. A reflection of this can be seen in the vague and uncertain techno-jargon and buzzwords which now pervade the communication of our pop culture. This is the narrative language of an increasingly cold and impersonal society. It is elusive and ultimately isolating to the people it affects. It also risks presenting a creative limitation for narrative artists in the "language" they use to tell their stories. If we were to ask any Internet marketing expert about what is important in creating effective corporate websites, they will most likely tell us that
