STERNE, LAURENCE
His son, Major-General John B. Sterling (b. 1840), after entering the navy, went into the army, and had a distinguished career (wounded at Tel-el-Kebir in 1882), both as a soldier and as a writer on military subjects. J olin Sterling’s papers were entrusted to the joint care of Thomas Carlyle and Archdeacon Hare. Essays and Tales, by John Sterling collected and edited, with a memoir of his life, by Julius Charles Hare, appeared in 1848 in two volumes. So dissatisfied was Carlyk with the memoir that he resolved to give his own “ testimony about his friend, and his vivid Life (1851) has perpetuated the memory of Sterling more than any of the latter’s own writings. STERNBERG, a town of Austria, in Moravia, 73 m. N.E. of Brunn by rail. Pop. (1900), 15,195, almost exclusively German. 28. Work In Progress 2
Critical essay examining sterne's influence on James Joyce, with specific reference to Finnegans Wake.
http://mason.gmu.edu/~lhill2/sterne.htm
Tellmetale of Sterne or Swift:
Shem as Marginalized Sentimenal Traveler
in Finnegans Wake I.vii by Francis X. Connor
Laurence Sterne haunts the text of Finnegans Wake as M'Intosh haunts Bloom: his presence is generally noted, but no one can entirely say what to make of him. Most basic guides to Joyce will list his fellow Irishman as a precursor, but, while scholars have written books on Rabelais and Shakespeare in FW, and others have mapped out the Wakean appearances of figures such as Jonathan Swift and Lewis Carroll through various articles, very little has been done to elucidate the tangible, but elusive, role of Sterne. Even the basic premise that Sterne figures at all in Joyce's writing has elicited some debate. In an early review of Ulysses, Cecil Maitland proffers that A superficial critic might assert that Joyce owes something of the elasticity of his prose to Sterne. Personally I should not be surprised if he had never read Tristram Shandy. The resemblance between the two writers is more apparent than real, for while Sterne's style is an affectation . . . Mr. Joyce elicits the subtlest process of the mind . . .1 Of course, this is the rumination of a somewhat overzealous critic, but, as any Joyce scholar knows, Joyce did not necessarily read all the authors to whom he alludes. The mention of an author in Joyce means little without context. Indeed, Lodwick Hartley, looking into the matter more closely, argues that "Sterne's influence on Joyce was not more than superficial."2 His article "'Swiftly-Sterneward': The Question of Sterne's Influence on Joyce" remains the only extended analysis of Sterne's influence on Joyce, and he concludes that Sterne plays "no significant role" in FW or elsewhere (47). I suspect his article impacted Joyce scholars, as the past thirty years have seen little work done on the two authors, and because Joycean critics have paid so little attention to Sterne, the question of his influence remains unsettled.3

Laurence Sterne : A recent Bibliography
The initial aim of this webpage is to supplement Jack Lynch's bibliography of useful texts on Laurence Sterne. Jack's project lists a few texts from 1995, but is incomplete at this point. The first stage of this site is to provide a reasonably comprehensive listing of essays and books on Sterne published since 1994. The second stage will be to provide annotation and editorial comment on the articles which I deem important. As the editor and creator of this site, these opinions will be mine and mine alone. I will strive to point out the areas of scholarly interest touched on by a work. The initial sources for this list are the MLA Bibliography and Abell. I have not included unpublished doctoral dissertations listed on Dissertations Abstracts International due to their general unavailability. I have listed only material available in English. 30. Jane Austen And Laurence Sterne
Material from Austen's writings which may indicate she read sterne's works.

Jane Austen and Laurence Sterne
For some time I have wondered whether Jane Austen had read Laurence Sterne's "Tristram Shandy". Both authors display great wit and honesty in their depiction of characters. "Tristram Shandy" slightly addresses the duties of clergy, a subject which interested Jane Austen. She certainly read "A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy". She might also have read Sterne's "Sermons of Mr. Yorick". "Tristram Shandy" was such a notorious book that I thought perhaps Jane Austen had avoided it. She was not one to honour the merely notorious. Tristram Shandy is not "merely notorious" of course, but did Jane Austen think so? I recently ran across a reference to "Tristram Shandy" in one of Jane Austen's letters. In her letter of September 14, 1804 to her sister Cassandra, Jane Austen is describing the household arrangements during the family's visit to Lyme. She says: [character in "Sir Charles Grandison"]
[This letter is unfortunately not one of those available online.] "Uncle Toby's annuity" is a reference to Corporal Trim in "Tristram Shandy". Trim's real name was James Butler see T.S. Vol.II Ch.V. That volume of "Tristram Shandy" was published in 1760.

Educated at Cambridge, he entered the Anglican church and was given the living of Sutton-in-the-Forest, Yorkshire, in 1738, where he remained until 1759. He came to London the following year and was a great social success. Unhappily married, he was involved with various women during his lifetime, most notably Mrs. Eliza Draper, for whom he wrote the Journal to Eliza (1767). He led a somewhat dissolute life and much of the time was plagued by ill health, dying finally of tuberculosis. In 1760 the first volume of his masterpiece Tristram Shandy A Sentimental Journey (1768). He also published in his lifetime several volumes of sermons. One of the most entertaining and original literary works in English, Tristram Shandy is, in a sense, a parody of a novel. It is a hodgepodge of character sketches, blank pages, dramatic action, transposed chapters, and various digressions. Sterne constantly obtrudes himself into the novel and is by turns witty, satiric, sentimental, knowledgeable, and obscene. Beneath this apparent chaos, however, is a structure based on the association of ideas. In
