Neal Stephenson (b. October 31 in Fort Meade Maryland ) is primarily a science fiction writer, who, although principally writing about computer and computer-related technologies such as nanotechnology , does not belong to the cyberpunk school of writers such as William Gibson and Bruce Sterling Although he wrote earlier novels such as the eco-thriller Zodiac , he came to fame in the early with the deeply funny novel Snow Crash which fuses memetics computer viruses , and other high-tech themes with Babylonian mythology . He has written two subsequent novels The Diamond Age: or A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer which deals with a future with extensive nanotechnology , and Cryptonomicon , a novel concerned with computing and codebreaking from the second World War codebreakers to a modern attempt to set up a data haven. (Though the title is reminiscent of the

This curious feature of modern lifecontinuous partial attentionposes a problem for a novelist. Writing novels is one of those activities that requires ALL one's attention. I cannot put it any better than Donald Knuth , who writes on his website , "Email is a wonderful thing for people whose role in life is to be on top of things. But not for me; my role is to be on the bottom of things. What I do takes long hours of studying and uninterruptible concentration. " Knuth also provides the following quote from Umberto Eco : "I don't even have an e-mail address. I have reached an age where my main purpose is not to receive messages." In a recent review of one of my novels, I was described as "Umberto Eco without the charm" and so it should be pretty clear in what direction I am going. One is familiar from popular culture the unkempt, hairy, paunchy recluse lacking in social graces. An ugly stereotype, to be sure, but these people do exist. Less well-known is the second kind of geek, the kind of guy Julius Caesar feared the lean and hungry geek. These geeks come in compact packages, thin and wiry. Neither its technology (with cybernetic dogs, portable nuclear-powered gatling guns, and ancient Sumerian neuro-linguistic programming), its politics (a libertarian world where the Mafia deliver pizzas and the Library of Congress has merged with the Central Intelligence Agency to form a public company), or its plot (the principal characters have a superhero-like immunity to being hit when people shoot at them) withstand close inspection. Kniha sa totiz da pokojne citat ako akcny pribeh, nadupany jazdou na motorkach, strielanim uranovych projektilov z megarotacneho gulometu ci surfovanim po Metaverze (Internet na tretiu). Ma zabavnych hrdinov, ktory su prirodzeni a vymysleni tak dokonale, ze sa citatel moze v jednej chvili trhat od smiechu a v druhej sa mu tisnu slzy do oci...
